YMMV / Point Break (1991)

Go To

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Was there anyone surprised that Bodhi and his gang were the Ex-Presidents?
  • Cult Classic: Wasn't a huge hit when it came out thanks to being overshadowed by Terminator 2: Judgment Day which opened the week before (directed by Kathryn Bigelow's ex, James Cameron). The film has now gone on to be considered one of the best action films of the 90s and gains interest from many who want to see Keanu Reeves' first action role.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: Some people have accused this film of romanticizing extreme sports, to the point people who don't participate in them are portrayed as having boring, mundane, meaningless lives.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Tom Sizemore playing a DEA agent shadowing drug dealers can be hard to swallow for some viewers considering Sizemore was arrested for drug possession, and appeared on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The idea of Federal law enforcement using a college football star as an undercover agent seems ridiculous. But Jay Dobyns was exactly that, an "All-Century" wideout for the University of Arizona who later infiltrated the Hells Angels for the ATFnote .
    • Johnny eventually goes back to football with a bunch of other washed-up players.
  • Ho Yay: Johnny and Bodhi, in spades.
Bohdi: "I know it's hard for you, Johnny. I know you want me so bad, it tastes like acid in your mouth."
  • Magnificent Bastard: Bodhi is the zen sage surfer who, along with three of his friends, form the bank-robbing "Ex-Presidents". Thanks to sticking to a minute-and-a-half time frame, in three years they've successfully pulled off 27 robberies without getting caught and pull off three more successfully as well. Bodhi takes in undercover FBI rookie Johnny Utah and helps him connect to surfing on a spiritual level and when realizing Johnny's onto him, Bodhi destroys the first getaway car and a gas station to cover his tracks and escapes Johnny in an extended and harrowing foot chase. Bodhi then has Johnny's new love and Bodhi's ex Tyler Endicott taken hostage to force Johnny's help in committing a final robbery that goes bad, resulting in Bodhi killing a cop. Bodhi escapes from his getaway plane with Johnny in pursuit and escapes after having Tyler released. Bodhi then evades Johnny until Australia and convinces him to let him ride the monster swell, both knowing full well it will likely cost him his life.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: Johnny and Tyler.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Prior to the film's climax, the Ex-Presidents are practically portrayed as a band of modern-day Robin Hoods who do not actually shoot anyone while robbing banks so that they can live an idealistic life based around surfing and skydiving.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: The reaction to the remake was not good, as many people perceived it as an emotionless and low-budget copy of the original.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: This film was made during the early days of the 1990s extreme sports craze, during which the public (especially young people) became more interested in sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, skydiving, and mountain biking. The increased interest in extreme sports during the 90s would later give birth to the X Games and Winter X Games.
