YMMV / Onegai My Melody

Go To

  • Cult Classic: While the anime and its sequel series was popular in Japan during its original airing, the series has gained a small following in the West market (notably from American Sanrio fans) beginning in the early 2010s. The Western fanbase only started increasing after Sanrio decided to make Piano more prominent in numerous Sanrio related works beginning in 2014 (and especially 2015). Beginning in 2018, the anime's Western fanbase started becoming more vocal online and various social media sites begging Sanrio to bring the series to the American market.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • If social media is anything to go by, a lot of people like to ship My Melody/Kuromi or Baku/Kuromi and ignore Kuromi's crush on Hiiragi. It helps that in the first season, there's an actual scene of Kuromi kissing Melody note  and in the end of Shuffle she breaks out of the Dark Power to stop Melody from locking herself in the closet forever, plus the official Twitter account for My Melody shows Kuromi being more friendly towards Melody, suggesting that she's gotten over her hatred towards her since the events of the anime. That being said, there's a significant amount of people who against this pairing. Some feel like it goes against Kuromi's characterization or rather have My Melody with someone who canonically likes her (like her best friends Piano or Hello Kitty) which leads to some Ship-to-Ship Combat. Things among this pairing got more tense as the Hello Kitty Supercute Adventures webtoon confirmed that Kuromi has a crush on Badtz-Maru, thus giving more reasons to go against it. Although she's become a lot more of a best friend towards Melo, and unlike Onegai, she's a protagonist.
    • My Melody/Piano has become popular starting in the late 2010s due to both characters having a very close relationship in the anime and official merchandise where the two are commonly seen together.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Juuzou Shiroyama, a male character who is obsessed with My Melody and wears pink. 13 years later, Sanrio would make Sanrio Boys, a series about men liking Sanrio characters and other "girly" things.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Kuromi is mean, all because My Melody really made her life miserable.
    • Mana, considering the fact that the incident with all of those cute things made her a Jerkass to My Melody.
  • Memetic Mutation: Some sort of loli breakfast machine.
    • The anime is infamous among the Youtube Poop community for having every Youtube Poop thumbnail changed to a single screenshot of My Melody's friend Piano for a short period between late 2009 and 2010 by a hacker named MeiAIDS. The Youtube Poop community refereed to the character as Piano-chan since that's what the characters called her in the anime. Eventually, remixes were created that took samples of Piano's bleating from the anime set to a certain popular song as a result of the incident.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Since the The New '10s, the anime has gained a following with the LGBT community with many people shipping Kuromi/Melody or alternatively Piano/Melody. See the FanPreferredCouple entry above for more information.
  • Moe:
  • Squick: In an episode of Sukkiri when Kuromi fantasies about marrying Hiiragi: Rabbits having crushes on people is all fine and dandy, but is she hoping he'll knock her up?!
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Some fans of the series don't like Sukkiri due to the run time being cut to 10-11 minutes, and especially Kirara for the switch to Flash animation, making characters look Off-Model.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Many people new to the series assumed that Mana was a boy, due to her lack of feminine features, Boyish Short Hair, and her deep, masculine voice. To quote some amusing comments from a YouTube video for Episode 8:
Replier to the above commentor: That's because Mana IS a girl.
  • Wangst: Keiichi Hiiragi's reaction to coming second in a violin competition: he smashes his priceless Stradivarius, and goes into catatonic BSOD lasting for days.
    • Although it wasn't really so much coming in second as it was that the guy that beat him was able to play the Song of the Dark Power.
    • When Uta discovers Keiichi is the one who fuels Kuromi's magic, she goes into Heroic BSoD for at least one day.
