YMMV / Neutral Milk Hotel
Creator Breakdown: One of the most notable in the indie rock world, Jeff Mangum suffered a pretty serious nervous breakdown which he credited to the unfulfilled hope that his music could help the people he cared about who were suffering (namely the individuals whose stories inspired In the Aeroplane over the Sea, and in the same vein Anne Frank). He stopped playing live for nearly a decade and has only recorded a small handful of songs since.
Crowning Music of Awesome: WITH HORNS!
Face of the Band: Jeff Mangum for sure.
The potato/drum girl on the cover of ITAOTS
Freud Was Right: Jeff sometimes uses sexual imagery to describe non-sexual things, such as in "Communist Daughter," so....uh,
inverted? Who says "Communist Daughter" can't be sexual?
Memetic Mutation: The cover of . In The Aeroplane Over The Sea ◊ Just look at it.

"ARE YOU RECORDING ME?"
Explanation Narm: Some of the Word Salad Lyrics really push the Rule of Symbolism as far as it will go, and Jeff's voice doesn't help when he reaches his higher register. See Memetic Mutation.
Despite its heavy dose of Nightmare Fuel, Jeff's breakdown at the end of Sailing Through is this for some.
Reclusive Artist: Mangum remained out of the limelight for ten years. In 2009, he began making live appearances again, usually sitting in with his friends' bands or playing solo gigs for charity.

True Art Is Angsty
True Art Is Incomprehensible
The Woobie: Jeff Mangum really deserves a hug.
Unacceptable Targets: Due to being an indie band that hasn't sold out beyond its massive cult, any criticism towards them is met with massive backlash.
