YMMV / My Little Pony (2022)

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: The initial 10 issue arc had the middle six save Issue #6 do nothing to advance it leaving many frustrated that half the arc was a delay in its resolution.
  • Better on DVD: The backlash over the initial 10 issue arc significantly drecreased after its final issue in part because the excessive Filler issues are mitigated by reading it in one go, or skipping them for those inclined, allowing more focus to be drawn to the main stories strengths.
  • Evil Is Cool: Discord's new appearance on the issue covers was immediately meet with this reaction, even from those who didn't like the idea of him being a villain again. His status as a Anti-Villain instead of a true villain, has only increased his cool factor. As it gives him more depth beyond going evil again, just because of the standard Who Wants to Live Forever?.
  • Fan-Disliked Explanation: The comics reveal the Happy Ending Override of G4 started shortly after "The Last Problem" when Opaline manipulated the pony tribes into prejudice against each other over their magic, which caused such disastrous consequences, Twilight Sparkle resorted to gathering all the world magic into the Unity Crystals so they'd only have magic if in harmony with each other. This was widely criticized by the fanbase, as the Mane Six have dealt with this same thing before and without resorting to such drastic measures, and it's questionable how the ponies would turn against each other so quickly when Twilight's reign was a golden age of harmony throughout the known world. Further, it gave more fuel to complaints about Twilight taking the throne that under her rule peace only lasted a matter of decades and was so fragile that it was all undone by a single pony. While if this is still canon is suspect given the show had Spike far older when the Unity Crystals were created suggesting it happened much later than in the comics, later explanations being so vague and contradictory that this original expiation remains the only substantive attempt and effort to connect the continues hasn't helped.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: The initial arc was hit by this hard due to proving complaints about G4's ending and G5's premise and above-average continuity errors with the show and even with itself. Even many who found the story and ending Worth It saw it as irreconcilable with the show as their befriending Discord meant his powers and knowledge seemingly would invalidate Opaline's threat.
  • Fan Wank: Some have proposed that Discord was lying about or misremembering the circumstances of the Happy Ending Override of Friendship Is Magic, because of the Fan-Disliked Explanation for it and has a lot of holes in it to fill in.
  • I Knew It!: Many fans have speculated Twilight was responsible for the creation of the Unity Crystals, and Discord was the one who stole the Pegasus Crystal. Issue #2 confirms both theories.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Issue #1: When Pipp falls from the sky, Izzy manages to save her through the unconventional method of creating a smoothie cushion to break her fall.
    • Issue #10: The Mane Five overcome the dissent that has been slowly building between them, and work together to escape the cage Discord placed them in.
  • Signature Scene: Discord tearfully looking at Fluttershy's message as her ghost hugs him has quickly become this for the comics and arguably G5 so far in general. For how much emotion it evokes and showing the willingness to touch on deeper and more mature themes.
  • Tainted by the Preview:
    • The announcement that they'd explore the ruins of Canterlot was mixed over the highly awaited explanation for what happened to the Friendship Is Magic era being dealt with by the comics, whose quality and canonicity are contentious.
    • The synopsis's establishing Discord as the antagonist got backlash due to seemingly continuing his contentious actions from the Friendship Is Magic finale. Although much more well-received once Issue 2 came out, due to establishing that while he may be a antagonist again, his reasonings for being so actually make sense and are quite noble in intent.
