YMMV / My Huntsman Academia

Go To

  • Adorkable:
    • Izuku's a shy, easily flustered, and prone to dorky fanboying while meeting one of his idols. All of his attempts at flirting are all hilariously cheesy at best, with Yang struggling not to bust out laughing over how hard he's trying and how bad his pickup lines are. She even calls him "too pure for this world" right after she offers to become his girlfriend.
    • Ruby's no less dorky than Izuku, admiring every cool weapon she comes across and asking for autographs when she meets a particularly cool Huntsman or Huntress. She also frequently mixes up words and gets them wrong.
Ruby: Hooray for... uh, what's the word for getting by thanks to your family?
Weiss: Nepotism, and no Ruby, what Shoto and I have isn't-
      Ruby: HOORAY FOR NEPOTISM!
    • Sun Wukong's kind-hearted and a bit goofy and childish, wanting to invoke a hardboiled cop drama while doing reconnaissance by drinking coffee, but he can't handle how bitter it is and drinks hot cocoa instead.
  • Arc Fatigue: A common complaint about the story is its slow burn-style of writing thanks to the focus on character interactions and slice-of-life. As a result, it can go for weeks without any action scenes, particularly during the holiday seasons.
  • Archive Panic: The Spacebattles thread has 307 threadmarked chapters (and counting) as well as 217 canon omakes and 262 non-canon omakes. Needless to say, there's a lot for the uninitiated to dig through. The main story alone has 1.2 million wordsnote  as of May 30th, 2019, almost as many as the entire Harry Potter series!
  • Creator Worship: The author has received consistent praise from the readership, which often refers to him as their "simian overlord" due to his username. The author can be abrasive when it comes to their ideas in relation to others very much making this ymmv
  • Crossover Ship: Because it's a fusion of two universes, there's strong potential for these to exist. The official couple of the story is Dragonfruit, or Yang Xiao Long and Izuku Midoriya, and he was shipped with a few other RWBY characters before that became official. In fact, with the exception of Nora and Ren, all of the teased ships have been crossover ships- Weiss and Shoto, Katsuki and Ruby/Neo, Tsu and Sun, Toshinori and Glynda...
  • Creator's Pet: Gorilla_Fingers seems to really like Raven. Changing her from a dead beat mother to a Tsundare who’s been Secretly watching as a Bird Yang’s whole life.
  • Escapist Character: As is usually the case for a Quest and a shonen story, Izuku was a scrawny nerd who was bullied all his life before he was given the chance to chase his dreams by the man he admired most. He attends one of the prestigious academies in the world and is surrounded by gorgeous girls (who all oogle his hard-earned six-pack abs) while developing his Superpower Lottery of a Semblance. All the while, he's destined to become a world-famous hero (assuming he can survive whatever Remnant throws at him). This is on top of getting a smoking hot, gentle, fun, and understanding girlfriend in Yang after years of believing that a high-maintenance nerd like him would never find a date.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • At one point, Izuku has to fight against Monoma (who has a Semblance that copies other people's Semblances) and his key concern is not letting him copy One For All due to fear that Monoma would kill himself. About a year later, and the 1A vs 1B arc of the canon manga begins, with Izuku having the exact same fears. There, though, it turns out that he was worried for nothing- Canon Monoma did manage to copy One For All (unlike Quest Izuku, who avoided that), but since a key part of it is the stockpiled energy (which the copy version did not have) it was practically useless for Monoma.
    • The Wolpertinger Saga was a series of omakes written in 2018 about a trip to the Emerald Forest on behalf of Port to hunt Wolpertingers, a type of Grimm that resemble a jackalope (rabbit with horns). Gorilla Fingers decided to make that canon, and would (when the time was right) make it part of the main quest. As the arc was starting to wrap up in quest, season seven of RWBY debuted and revealed actual Jackalope Grimm.
    • In Volume 7, it's revealed that Penny's Aura is created by Pietro ripping parts of his own Aura and placing it into her, deteriorating his physical health in the process, inadvertently validating the way Brokenness works in My Huntsman Academia.
  • Idiosyncratic Ship Naming:
    • The Izuku-Yang ship is explicitly referred to as "Dragonfruit" by the author, due to the connotations of Izuku's surnamenote  and Yang's association with dragons.
    • In-Universe, the Toshinori/Glynda ship is called "I Cast Fist" because of... well, one is the single physically strongest human in the world and the other is a witch.
    • The Weiss/Shoto pairing is "A Song of Ice and Fire".
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Izuku is, predictably, this, having gratuitous amounts of Ship Tease with practically every named female character he meets in his age group.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: Due to having similarly messy green hair and a shared tendency to be Motor Mouths, some fans like to believe that Professor Oobleck is actually Izuku's biological father with Inko even though they've never met.
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat:
    • The quest is a fusion of two series with very active shipping debates over who will get together with whom, and that's just in their own respective fandoms (the arguments among fans of RWBY ships are nearly legendary at this point, and the argument over who Izuku will get with is known as the "Dekubowl.") Izuku-Pyrrha, Izuku-Yang, and Izuku-Blake shippers are the most vocal ones. Ultimately, Dragonfruit Shipping (Izuku-Yang) is the victor. In-Universe, the teachers and students apparently run betting pools over who will get together with whom and when.
    • Since the Izuku shipping debate was settled, there's been low-level combat between those who want to see Katsuki paired with Ruby or with Neo. A newer one to pop up has been the low-level battle between those who want to see Kirishima get together with Blake or Pyrrha.
