YMMV / Mundo Canibal

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: According to the Piologo Brothers, they didn't create "Avaiana de Pau" with the intention either to endorse child violence, or to criticize it; they just made it because they found it funny and to make people laugh. However, while some people intepreted it as glorifying beating children, others also interpreted that the cartoon was poking fun at how ridiculous it was; almost every child that appears is beaten for something they didn't even do and was wrongly accused by their parent, and the only one who did, just did something as minor as accidentally dropping a portrait case, and got his hand totally mauled. Also, the children later appear submissively taking the blame for the things that weren't even their fault, which clearly portrays the parents as being on the wrong.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Whenever Donizete tells her blind mother Mrs. Donizilda to look at something, she replies with "I'm seeing it, daughter!". Is she being sarcastic because she obviously can't see anything whatsoever, or is she just pretending she does see it to appease her daughter? She also repeats the same phrase in some cases where Donizete didn't even tell her to look at something, or when talking to her husband Donizildo, who is completely aware of her blindness, which makes it even more puzzling.
  • Designated Monkey: Whatahell and Ai Para both are notable for receiving high amounts of abuse from other characters, with the latter having his mouth, head and toes completely scratched off in one occasion. Knowing the Piologo Brothers' mindset, he fact both are homosexual stereotypes probably wasn't a coincidence.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Carlinhos' early animations were pretty popular with foreign viewers on YouTube, mostly due to not relying much on dialogue but rather on the scatological humor, which ended up making them shocking enough to leave a mark on viewers (which was exactly the original purpose of the character). Before the official Mundo Canibal channel privated the videos, a good portion of the comments were from viewers from other countries claiming to have found the video accidentally and being shocked at it.
  • Growing the Beard: Mundo Canibal truly began to take its shape and develop its distinctive style in 2002. During this period, the series introduced and gave more prominence to several characters who would later become iconic. However, it was in 2004 with the release of "Avaiana de Pau" that the website experienced a significant turning point. This animation marked a refinement in both the art style and humor, solidifying Mundo Canibal's reputation and popularity.
  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales:
    • 2008 introduced the character Cotoco, a limbless kid who's often made fun of and/or suffers due to his lack of arms and legs. When his animations were first released, it was reported that children with similar deficciences actually enjoyed having a character with the same condition as them.
    • According to Rogério Vilela, when he created the characters PêFêGôs in the late 90s, he expected to get backlash due to them all being just gay stereotypes. However, according to himself, several actual gay people were very fond of these characters.
  • Misaimed Merchandising: Many of the animations not only contain swear words, but also plenty of heavy content such as gore, sex, assault, rape, scat, murder, abuse, and more. Even then, in 2009, Mundo Canibal released several school supplies themed on the characters, aimed mainly at pre-teens.
  • Once Original, Now Common: During the late 90s when Mundo Canibal was beginning, animations featuring dark-humor or gross content like it were relatively uncommon, and internet Flash animations were still a new thing. The two aspects ended up attracting a niche of people who appreciated this kind of content but couldn't find much of it. Nowadays, there is thousands of Black Comedy animations, and internet animations are basically commonplace, which leads many people to believe that now, Mundo Canibal is just another outdated old internet cartoon.
  • Seasonal Rot: Many fans believe that the animations started declining in quality since around 2011 or 2012, featuring an overuse of Pastor Metralhadora sketches (despite him being a fan-favorite), while removing popular characters such as Mr. Donizildo, Whatahell and even Cotoco.
  • Signature Song: The short song the narrator ad-libs in the end credits of "Avaiana de Pau". He also sings in several other end credits, but this song is the most iconic due to being featured in the most popular animation of the website and being the one that started it all, as well as having been improvised on the spot, while the posterior songs were apparently all written beforehand.
  • Spiritual Successor: Cotoco is considered the replacement for Deforméd Baby in the post-2004 era. Both of them are deficcient little kids that suffer often, but unlike Deforméd, Cotoco is an older child and (sort of) actually gets what he deserves due to being an asshole in most appearances, whilst Deforméd Baby was just constantly mauled for no reason whatsoever.
  • Squick: The scenes of Carlinhos eating poop (or forcing other characters to do so) can be very disgusting, especially for newcomer viewers.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Many of the classic remastered animations change the soundtracks in some parts adding the current standard royalty-free music, usually when the original music was unfitting or there was no music at all. This can annoy some old viewers, who preferred the original soundtrack instead.
    • After Phelippe G. Neto left, the changes in his characters' voices had a very negative reception, such as Tomelirolla and Boby Psicótico. Mr. Donizildo, Donizete and Whatahell were removed for good after Phelippe's definite departure to avoid this reception.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The removal of Mr. Donizildo is often considered as this, as he was a flexible character with an interesting premise: he was put into everyday situations, but would deal with them in unusual and unexpected ways. There are many different plots that fans think would work with him, but are highly unlikely to happen due to the Piologo Brothers having retired the character.
  • Values Dissonance: Applies as a whole, but many of the oldest animations in the early years of the site would definitely not be allowed at all now. For example, the "Olha Mãe" trilogy, which introduces Donizete in a set of three short animations; the first part has her groping her boobs, the second part has her lifting her skirt, and the third part has her dancing naked on the shower. Anyone who tried something similar nowadays would, at best, have the video be taken down immediately.
  • The Woobie: Fetinho, from the eponymous animation. He is an aborted fetus who somehow survived and was trying to work as a cardboard collecter to get some money for food. However, he ends up visiting Maloqueiro Popai, who gets Fetinho high, kicks him out of the house, and later throws him at a electric wire believing him to be an alien. On the last scene he appears, Fetinho is seen getting electrocuted for several minutes and likely died.
