Sure, it was safer (and didn't waste food), but purists argued that you couldn't use things other than potatoes, and the places you could stick the pieces into were pre-determined, thus stunting a child's creativity.
• Values Dissonance: The play set coming with a plastic tobacco pipe had become this as early as The '70s when the FCC limited tobacco ads in the media. The pipe was finally discarded in 1987 when Mr. Potato Head became a mascot for The Great American Smokeout.
