YMMV / Mars of Destruction

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The game itself doesn't receive a lot of attention (not helped by the fact that the game is a case of No Export for You and has never been released outside of Japan).
  • Ass Pull: Was it ever hinted that The Ancients were the original inhabitants?
  • Bile Fascination: Its reputation as one of the worst anime in existence means that people will watch it to see just how bad it is.
  • Faux Symbolism: Takeru dons a mecha suit by entering a cross-shaped chamber.
  • Narm:
    • Any drama to be had from the scene where Takeru's father forces him to wear the mecha suit is spoiled by said father sounding an awful lot like Cookie Monster.
    • Early on, one of the girls gets her head blown off by one of the attacks from the Ancients. The fact that they have to go to a hospital to confirm that she's dead ruins the tiny possibility of the scene being a Tear Jerker.
    • The final battle is to the tune of The Barber of Seville. Sure, classical music does make for great BGM, but not every melody is appropriate for everything.
  • Never Live It Down: Whenever ANYONE brings up Kurita Aoi (The brown haired girl with red ribbons), it’s likely to bring up how awful her gunning accuracy is after she missed EVERY shot at close range with a rapid fire weapon.
  • Serial Numbers Filed Off: An alien invasion? A reluctant, angsty, androgynous teenager coerced by his father to don a biomechanical suit of armor? A lack of budget overtaking the narrative? Usage of classical music? Are you sure this isn't Neon Genesis Evangelion we're talking about?
  • So Bad, It's Good: Some people consider it to be this due to how it utterly fails on all fronts, as well as the abundant unintentional humor. However, others consider it to be just bad.
  • Special Effect Failure: The entire short is poorly animated. Of particular note is how characters will often clearly get shot and only get injured several seconds later.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The idea of the Ancients being the original inhabitants of Earth that have come back to reclaim their home world is a potentially interesting idea. Unfortunately, the OVA is pretty much over by that point with no time to explore it.
