YMMV / Luigi's Mansion (Series)

Go To

  • Complete Monster: King Boo, after his defeat by Luigi in the first game, throws away any redeeming qualities upon his return in Dark Moon. Shattering the Dark Moon, he brainwashes every ghost in Evershade Valley and uses them on a campaign to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom and "paint the town red." King Boo abducts Mario himself and several Toads and imprisons them within paintings, and performs experiments on his own ghosts whereas he had previously been A Father to His Men. In his culmination of depravity, King Boo tears open a portal to the ghosts' homeworld and threatens to tear apart the fabric of the universe out of spite. In Luigi's Mansion 3, he is set free by Hellen Gravely, and together they gather Luigi and his friends in the Last Resort hotel in another attempt to trap them in paintings. King Boo eventually writes off Hellen, her staff, and even his own Boos as failures and attempts to absorb the entire hotel, ghosts and all, just to capture Luigi.
  • Creepy Awesome: King Boo. He may only be a King Mook but he is given so much more personality in the first game alone. Did we mention that he defeated Mario three times? He does feel like a real threat. Notably, when appearing outside of Luigi's Mansion games, he has a much simple design, being only a bigger Boo with a crown. Many fans wish they kept his grimmer one for his other appearance as it is much cooler.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Many of the ghosts are this. Melody Pianissima and Biff Atlas from the first game, a pianist Gamer Chick and a Jerk Jock with a cool name, many wanted to see more of them and while Luigi's Mansion 3 features a pianist and a sportsman ghost, they are not Melody or Biff. However, the new musician, Amadeus Wolfgeist, has become a fan favorite on his own right.
  • First Installment Wins: While few would call the sequels bad games, many fans who entered the series with the first game are of the opinion that the tone and atmosphere is superior and has not been matched by the lighter, more comedic tone of the sequels. Even as the third game walked back some of the second's departures to resemble the more open-feeling design of the first as well as adding Portrait Ghost-like boss characters, it has still been criticized for being too cartoony.
  • Spiritual Successor: To Mario Is Missing!, in which it involves Luigi in a lead role of a puzzle-solving action adventure game, and Mario being kidnapped and needing to be rescued.
