YMMV / Heroes Reborn (2021)

Go To

  • Broken Base: While some readers hated Phil Coulson's character and were happy to see him become a villain before being killed off for good, fans of Coulson weren't happy with this radical and dark change and wish he would return as a heroic character.
  • Catharsis Factor: After the event showing the Squadron as unstoppable powerful near villains being treated as heroes, it is satisfying when the Avengers takes them down and makes them Break the Haughty. Especially Dr. Spectrum, arguably the worst member who has his Power Prism destroyed and is reduced to a crying mess.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: The tie-in issues garnered more interest rather than the central event itself. It leans into fans being more interested in how the universe reset would affect the heroes they know rather than the Squadron Supreme themselves.
  • Older Than They Think:
  • Spoiled by the Format: Initially, it was unknown who changed reality to this new world. Or that would be the idea if one of the covers didn't spoil from the get go that it was Mephisto all along.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Phil Coulson was a Base-Breaking Character, with his creation being seen by many as a transparent attempt to capitalize on the popularity of his MCU counterpart. Heroes Reborn ends with Coulson being written out of the comics for good.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: After teasing Blade as the central character of this event, after the first issue the majority of his actions take place either entirely off-screen or relegated to the brief backup stories in each issue. Needless to say this left fans of the character who got excited that he was finally getting the chance to headline a big event comic pretty underwhelmed.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The main event itself was criticized for its pacing, with 5 out of 7 of the main issues being dedicated to "retelling" the origins of the 5 members of the Squadron Supreme, with a couple of pages of each issue reserved as a backup which followed Blade bringing back the Avenger's memories almost entirely off screen. This also led to criticism that it was an event where not enough actively happened only for the resolution to quickly get rushed.
  • Unexpected Character: In the Heroes Reborn: Magneto and the Mutant Force tie-in, Mister One and Mister Two are a part of Magneto's team; Their only other appearance before this was a 1974 Captain America comic.
  • Win Back the Crowd: After mixed responses to events such as Empyre and King in Black, a significant portion of readers have praised the Heroes Reborn event because doesn't suffer from being overly ambitious and coming out too late. Additionally, the Squadron's individual stories have them so over the top and ridiculously powerful that it became fun and the nods to the Silver Age also play into the nostalgia factor. Plus, after going through multiple costumes in the last decade, Thor fans are happy to have him back in the classic Jack Kirby outfit even if it's only for this event.
