YMMV / her (2013)

Go To

  • Award Snub: Even though the film actually won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (and over American Hustle, one of the Academy Award frontrunners, to boot), some thought that Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson were worthy of Oscar nominations for their performances, as was Spike Jonze's direction.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The flashback scenes of Theodore and Catherine became this in light of Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara becoming a real-life couple (meeting as a result of this movie), eventually having a child together. Hopefully their relationship turns out better than their characters.
  • Memetic Mutation: The Internet has had fun mashing up the movie with Arrested Development thanks to that show's Running Gag of "Her?" concerning Ann Veal.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
  • Spiritual Antithesis: With Ex Machina, both are about shy, sentimental men that fall in love with a feminine-presenting AI and find her more human-like than they initially thought. Her, despite dramatic moments, is much more lighthearted, while Ex Machina is a tense thriller. Both also conclude in completly different notes.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Samantha's ascension to the cloud, and the two saying their goodbyes.
    • Theodore's final letter to Catherine, especially with the Reality Subtext that these are likely creator Spike Jonze's thoughts about his ex-wife, Sofia Coppola.
  • The Woobie: Theodore, who spends most of the movie battling with depression and Isabella, a woman who volunteers to act as a "surrogate" in Theodore and Samantha's relationship. Turns out she was a Broken Bird looking for love and misread Theodore's anxiety with the situation as being a total rejection of her.
