YMMV / Head in the Clouds

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: The film seems to treat Mia's reveal to Guy that she and Gilda were lovers before Gilda met again with Guy as a shock to Guy (and the audience), but their relationship was already shown to be so ridiculously Les Yay-laden by that point, one would probably have assumed that they were in a relationship already and believe that the film simply didn't want to overtly mention it.
  • Cliché Storm: Most of the negative reviews the film received criticized it for repeating the same tired clichés of "pair of lovers caught up in World War II" movies made in the line of Casablanca. The New York Times' review of the film went as far as say that "if World War II is to continue to mean anything anymore, it has to be reimagined as a real event, not a deluxe, romantically spiced-up newsreel."
  • Strangled by the Red String: The film is devoted to building up the relationship between Guy and Gilda, so him suddenly hooking up with Mia comes off as out of nowhere, as they came off more as a pair of good friends rather than anything else. The fact that Mia is killed almost immediately after they consumate it doesn't help.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: The film received mediocre reviews, but even the most negative reviews praised Charlize Theron's performance.
