• Awesome Art: About the only thing that anyone claims is unironically good are the backgrounds, which are fairly detailed and portray the setting with the appropriate amount of Scenery Gorn.
• Captain Obvious Reveal: Dr. Yoshinaga as the Big Bad. As if having the same voice actor as Char Aznable wasn't obvious enough, he did not care about people getting killed, had shady intentions, and the fact that he looked similar to Assassin/Sasaki Kojirou didn't help.
• Questionable Casting: Shūichi Ikeda just didn't fit playing a handsome Mad Scientist since he was already in his 70s. They could have gotten with either Shin-ichiro Miki, Yuichi Nakamura, or even Shunsuke Takeuchi instead.
• Special Effect Failure:
  • The titular monsters looks more like generic PlayStation 2 models than anything. It's obvious that the 2D animation was done first and the CGI hastily layered on top of it, resulting in numerous errors in perspective and positioning. The CG monsters also mesh poorly with the background and scenery, with the supposed giant heavy monsters leaving no footprints, not kicking up any dust, and generally not affecting the environment at all.
  • The 2D animation for the characters looks no better. With them being regularly Off-Model, possessing stiff poses and movements, and are in general poor translations of Yoshitaka Amano's original designs. To say nothing about the show's gaudy compositing making everything look worse than they already do.
• So Bad, It's Good: While the show suffers from bad writing, awful animation, and drab voice acting, some people can't help but laugh at its sheer incompetence, unintentional laughs, and an insane ending.
• WTH, Costuming Department?: Kathleen looks more like a fashion model than someone from a post-apocalyptic world.
