  • Alternative Character Interpretation: It is very obvious that Sakura loves Makubex very much, but is it romantic or motherly?
  • Anti-Climax Boss:
    • Der Kaiser after provoking Ban into a Superpowered Evil Side goes down in one hit after his son manages to hit him, and after a long curb-stomp battle on his part.
    • Ban loves doing this. He tends to have these victories.
    • Also the Voodoo King appears in one volume after all the build-up to him and he's not even the main focus
    • Ginji vs Ban. Their fight was just a dream.
  • Ass Pull:
    • Just how many powers does Akabane have?
    • Himiko is Ban's sister? How does that make sense? Why didn't Der Kaiser mention her? Why doesn't Ban share the same curse as Himiko?
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: It turns out that Himiko is actually Ban's sister but not Yamato's. How is that important? How does that make sense with the flashbacks? In fact nobody ever mentions it again. Sounds like an Ass Pull.
  • Cult Classic: A good read, but not as nearly as mainstream as others series such as Toriko, One Piece or Naruto.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Kuroudo Akabane, who's arguably the most popular and admired character in the series. He tends to fluctuate in polls as being ranked #1 and #2 (with Ban or Ginji occasionally overtaking him depending on which one was getting more character development during that particular time period in the manga's serialization).
    • And to a certain degree, Juubei Kakei. If only for the trickle-down effect: Ayamine Rando notes that as soon as Toshiki's past was linked to Juubei's, his popularity shot right up.
    • Yukihiko Miroku despite appearing in one arc, is very popular.
  • Foe Yay Shipping:
    • Akabane and Ban/Ginji, no wonder Ginji gets so nervous when he's around. And taken up to eleven, there's the one-sided Takuma Fudou and Ban.
    • Fudou's the human incarnation of it, being almost as bad as Creed.
  • Narm: Akabane lectures Himiko in the Voodoo Child arc for trying to kill her enemies, says the man who prefers killing.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The manga definitely is this, starting with Ban's illusions which are much Darker and Edgier than the anime, graphic violence, etc.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Shannon McCormick, Akabane's voice actor in the dub, is more commonly known these days for his roles on Rooster Teeth's flagship shows
  • The Scrappy: Even without a name, High School Girl was a Filler character was a demanding and dislikable character.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Professor Makube. For having such a significant name, this character is barely explored. The anime completely excised her.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • In the last arc, it brings up a unique element in Exotic Eye Designs with a single cross stigmata eye with a great deal of the major characters including Masaki, Ban's dad and Kazuki, but all that is brought up on it is that those who bare it, have set up "an important destiny".
    • Also the final arc would have been a great way to resolve all the individual conflicts of the characters but soon becomes a dragged out brawl with a great deal of anti-climatic fights and the revelation of the world being virtual reality
  • Unpopular Popular Character: In-verse, Akabane is treated like the plague considering the policy of Thou Shall Not Kill, but is constantly one of the most popular characters for being so Affably Evil and generally enjoying his work.
