YMMV / Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons

Go To

  • Breather Boss: Surprisingly, Anubis if his hideout is chosen as the last stage. While he doesn't flinch with basic attacks (something that's shared with all bosses in their last stage), he's much easier to hit due to his One-Winged Angel form being bigger than the other bosses, and the mooks that he summons are dogs and scorpions that can easily be taken care of. The only tradeoff is that he has a breath attack that can reverse your movement.
  • Broken Base: The game's usage of Super-Deformed characters and gameplay changes such as its Dynamic Difficulty-based levels has divided the fanbase. Some resent the silliness of it all, while others feel that the changes have made Double Dragon fun again for the first time in years (especially after IV's slow-paced gameplay).
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Marian's range is unparalleled even among other ranged specialists. Her supers have a very large area of effect, and she can often stunlock enemies, sometimes even bosses!
    • Billy Lee's upgraded Running Attack. Upgrading Billy's run does great damage and turn enemies and bosses into man made projectiles. A crafty and fast player can chain his running attack into easy Special KO Attacks. Leading into more food items turning into money (if any players at full health), or help into getting more money or health, if equipped with the Special KO upgrade perks that grant extra money or health.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • Common enemies can throw weapons at you from offscreen without any sound cues or wind up. Especially if you've turned up their aggression up to maximum.
    • Not everyone appreciates that "collect item" and "grappling/action" share the same button, which (depending on your fighter) can turn "collect the much-needed food" into "dodge right off a ledge" if your position is a few pixels off.
    • Tagging out is an important tool for breaking enemy combos, but when things are crowded, it's possible for your tagged-out fighter to eat further attacks (and even get KOed) before they can get offscreen.
  • Spiritual Successor: To Secret Base's previous title, Devil's Dare. A lot of similar gameplay mechanics made its way into Double Dragon Gaiden.
  • That One Boss:
    • Lady Okada, especially if her hideout was chosen as a later stage. Her wind slice attack deals a great amount of damage. What's worse is that her whirlwind attack can not only hurt you, but can also trap you for a short time, practically rendering you a punching bag for other enemies.
    • Anubis can be this if you face him as a later stage. He has a habit of using the Flash Step, and a move where he jams his scepter for an area of effect attack that can occasionally stun you.
    • All four gang leaders become this, when fighting them all at once in the last level. The place you fight them becomes crowded, and they avoid Mook Chivalry heavily. The only saving grace is their health amount is equal to a Sector 1 Boss Fight.
    • The Mayor/The Mysterious Warrior has many devastating moves that can stun lock you with every damage, and can instantly teleport if you try to hit him, similar to Anubis, with the only difference being that his can actually hurt you, has a lightning attack with a huge area of effect, and is not afraid to use a gap-closer Psycho Crusher. He also summons mooks when knocked down to his second health bar. The further the fight goes, the more Elite Mooks spawn.
  • That One Level: Anubis's level can become this at later stages, as much of it will be in darkness, leaving only a small circle of visibility around your fighter. The enemies, of course, have no trouble finding you or launching attacks at you from within the darkness.
