YMMV / Doom: Annihilation

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Don't rely too much on an assistant AI that's vulnerable to hacking, viruses, corruption, and demonic possession.
  • Broken Base: Fans are pretty divided whether this movie is better (better action, tighter pace, demons and Hell being featured, and many Easter Eggs) or worse (inferior actors, anti-climax ending, horribly similar to Aliens, and still following the same formula as its predecessor) than the 2005 movie. Some fans even thought that the film was going to be a pornographic parody because the acting and special effects were that bad.
  • Complete Monster: Stanga is a malevolent alien entity and the overlord of demonic forces from another dimension. Desiring to destroy all life in the universe, Stanga manipulates humanity into finding the "Gates" on the moon Phobos and then corrupts the head of UAC base on Phobos, Dr. Malcolm Betruger, into opening a way for his demons to invade the facility, killing almost everyone there and transforming them into zombies. As the team of Marines arrives there, the overlord has Betruger manipulate them into opening a portal to Earth, while Marines die one by one, and then, when Lt. Joan Dark gets pushed into his dimension, Stanga taunts her by saying how weak and pathetic humans are, before he orders his demons to charge to Earth and annihilate humanity.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Doom started life as an Aliens tie-in.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: This film reuses many plot elements from the first film, namely, a group of marines arriving at an overrun base and getting killed off until the main character is left and has a female character in the lead group.
  • Narm: The whole thing about one of the character's "lucky panties".
  • Tainted by the Preview: Fans were not pleased with the film's trailer between the obviously cheap production, being a second In Name Only film adaptation of Doom, and for seeming to Gender Swap the Doom Marine.
  • Too Cool to Live: Captain Savage is A Father to His Men, who also looks like the protagonist of the first two Doom games and is a good shot with his double barrel shotgun. Unfortunately, he gets killed fairly early, but not before performing a Heroic Sacrifice to close the door between surviving marines and zombies.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Dominic Mafham is giving his all as Dr. Betruger.
  • Video Game Movies Suck: It's a low-budget direct-to-video adaptation of a video game that copies Aliens without adding much to the formula. Whether or not it's better than the 2005 movie is up for debate, but it's widely agreed that both movies are terrible adaptions of Doom.
