YMMV / Doggy Poo

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: Near the end, a dandelion tells the Doggy Poo to "melt into her." Uhhhh....
  • Adaptation Displacement: The short is more well known than the book it was based on.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Depending on your views on dandelions are, the character is this. Dandelions are either pretty flowers or annoying weeds. It's easier to cut the film some slack on the "pesky weeds" thing when you consider that it's a story about a pile of shit, and it pretty obviously isn't taking much of a human-centric perspective into account to begin with.
  • Angst Aversion: The film is full of Tear Jerkers with very little relief anywhere.
  • Awesome Music: The film mostly teeters between ridiculously silly and poignantly touching, but the beautiful soundtrack provided by Yiruma gamely tips the scale in favor of the latter.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: Sure, the Doggy Poo eventually found his purpose in life, but the plant he helped grow was a dandelion, which are an invasive species that any groundskeeper worth their salt would likely want removed.
  • Narm: The ending, in which the dog turd decides to become fertilizer for a sprout of dandelion. 1: The film insists that the dandelion will become a beautiful flower, even though dandelions are widely considered to be unwanted weeds. 2: Dogs are carnivorous, and as such their poop is not a good fertilizer 3: It sounds like the doggy poo and the dandelion are talking about sex.
  • Narm Charm: The protagonist is a Talking Poo. How can you possibly take something like this seriously? Well, Doggy Poo is not only cute, but relatable and becomes a major Woobie. The lack of Toilet Humor also works in the film's favour.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The soil tearfully admitting to the Poo that he is about to be run over by the cart and it'll all be over.
    • The leaf having to take her leave, and her speech about having to go wherever the wind takes her, and saying she can only live for a year.
    • Happy tears come into play when the Doggy Poo finally finds his purpose in life and helps the Dandelion grow.
  • Ugly Cute: The main character is a surprisingly adorable Talking Poo.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The poo himself can be this for some people, mostly due to how cynical he can be.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The stop-motion visual effects are extremely well-detailed and quite beautiful. The Mysterious Mr. Enter found it a tough subject to pan simply because of how great the artwork and animation are.
  • Wangst:
    • The soil does this while going on for a verrrrrry long time about the fact he's gonna be run over by a cart.
    • The cynicism of the poo himself can get excessive for some viewers.
  • The Woobie:
    • Doggy Poo. Who'd have thought you could sympathize with a dog turd? The first thing he hears is a bird saying he's disgusting. Then a pile of soil calls him "the worst poo of them all". The soil apologizes, but then traumatizes the poor poo by talking about death. Shortly afterwards, Doggy Poo witnesses the soil - the closest he has to a friend - almost being crushed to death. The soil is then picked up by a farmer to be used to grow crops, leaving Doggy Poo alone to wonder what his purpose is. Then he meets a leaf, only to learn that the leaf is forced to go wherever the wind takes it. Several lonely months pass, and Doggy Poo is so desperate he's willing to be eaten by a hen to prove that he has a place in the world, but she denies him even that. In the end, he earns his happy ending when he find a sprout of dandelion who needs his help.
    • The leaf is forced to go wherever the wind takes it, and can't live longer than a year.
