YMMV: Dave Chappelle
  • Acceptable Targets: Nearly everyone and everything counts in his stand-up.
  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: A widespread belief is that Chappelle popularized the idea of "purple drank" by mocking the street drug (a mix of soda and codeine-containing cough syrup) in a stand-up joke as containing "sugar, water, and purple." The actual routine had in fact referred to grape drink and was humorously using the differences between soft drinks and fruit juices as an allegory to compare the disparity between (mostly white) high-income and (mostly minority) low-income American lifestyles.
  • Unfortunate Implications: Part of the reason why Chappelle quit mainstream comedy was a fear that he was drifting towards this and that people were laughing at his jokes for all the wrong reasons.
