YMMV / Danny Phantom S 2 E 11 The Fright Before Christmas

Go To

  • Anvilicious: Danny lectures the Ghost Writer (and the audience) that just because you've had rotten Christmases in the past doesn't give you the right to be a jerk during the holidays, especially to people who love them.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: According to fans, the Ghost Writer is one Hot Librarian. Downplayed, since he wasn't evil, just overzealous in trying to teach Danny a lesson.
  • Evil Is Cool: Ghost Writer, although he wasn't so much a villain as he was excessive in teaching Danny a lesson about being a jerk on Christmas.
  • Magnificent Bastard: The Ghost Writer is a wisecracking ghost who decides to teach Danny a lesson about how ruining Christmas for others is wrong after Danny destroys his prized poem and mocks him for it. In order to do this, the Ghost Writer traps Danny in a world where everything rhymes. Using his powers to summon and control monsters such as ghost reindeer and living Christmas tree monsters, the Ghost Writer cleverly sets about framing Danny for the destruction of the town and holiday he caused to make him into an outcast in order to show him how ruining the holiday for others feels. When Danny returns to the Ghost Zone to defeat him, he summons all of Danny's Rogues Gallery to aid him and when they side with Danny against him due to a Christmas truce, has them mind-controlled into fighting each other. Even though he's defeated, the Ghost Writer is still able to teach Danny his lesson and ends the episode being proud of him.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Sure, Danny needed to learn his lesson about not ruining the holiday for everyone and let go of how crappy his past Christmases were, but he wasn't exactly wrong to be upset given his parents arguing the existence of Santa, to the point of not even noticing when they put their son in danger. If anything, someone should have taught them that arguing over the existence of Santa Claus should not be more important than making their family happy.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Sure, Danny admits that he shouldn't cause The Chain of Harm by following in his parents' footsteps, but he is a kid. The Fentons are adults, who are responsible for their own actions. Danny even sees them harassing a Mall Santa and telling a group of children to their face that Santa is or isn't real. Sure, that's quality parenting of the year. What does it say that Danny's worst enemies end up being more sensible by cleaning up the damage while reassuring Danny that it will be back to business come next sunset?
  • The Woobie: He may be a jerk most of the time, especially to Danny, but it's genuinely rather sad that Mr. Lancer is so alone he has to give presents to himself for Christmas. Luckily, getting them back at the end with everyone else brings a smile to his face.
