  • Narm: As highlighted in several articles, a lot of Floridians can't take this film seriously because of the rather laughable inaccuracies.
    • The hurricane coming out of nowhere despite storm tracks being able to pick up on such storms weeks ahead of time makes Dave's choice to stay seem like he waited around for weeks.
    • Many Floridians who've been around alligators found the pinkish-red mouths cartoonish compared to the pale yellow it is in reality, some comparing it to looking like they just drank cherry kool-aid.
    • The aggression of the alligators coming off as over-the-top given how extremely placid gators usually are in reality — they tend to go for one good surprise lunge, and then look for an easier meal if that doesn't work.
    • The sheer number of times the two leads get bit by alligators and yet shrug it off with only minor surface wounds. Hayley gets bitten on both the arm and legs multiple times, even getting thrashed around and death-rolled in a manner that would be snapped bones or tore muscle and tendon; and then proceeds to get up, run, climb, and swim like it's nothing.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Morfydd Clark has a minute and a half of screen time as Haley's sister Beth, three years before her starring role as Lady Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
  • Spiritual Antithesis: To Piranha 3D, another Alexandre Aja horror film about killer aquatic animals. Whereas that film was Played for Laughs with tons of Black Comedy and Bloody Hilarious gore, this is a straightforward horror movie that treats its predators as a serious threat.
    • For similiar reasons of tone, it's also sometimes contrasted with Sharknado. The movie about a tornado full of sharks is silly and campy, while the movie about a hurricane full of alligators is fairly straight-faced and serious.
  • Spiritual Successor: The film plays like a spiritual sequel of sorts to The Shallows, though with gators instead of sharks. Both films have an extremely similar feel.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Having one or two of the looters last longer and maybe seek revenge against the alligators (considering how quickly they were dispatched when it felt significant that they were a family) could have been somewhat interesting.
