Clark was born in Sweden to a Scottish father and Welsh mother and was raised in Wales with Welsh as her first language. She was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD as a child and left school at 16, but discovered a passion for acting and was accepted by the National Youth Theatre of Wales and later trained at the Drama Centre in London before embarking on a successful stage career, performing in theatres such as The Donmar Warehouse and The Old Vic.
She is known for her film roles as Maud in Saint Maud and Dora Spenlow in The Personal History of David Copperfield, and for her television roles as Mina Harker in Dracula and Sister Clara in His Dark Materials, which were both produced by The BBC. She later landed the leading role of Galadriel in Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
For her critically lauded performance in Saint Maud, she won the BAFTA Cyrmu Award for Best Actress in 2021, was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award in the same year, and was also named British Actress of the Year by the London Film Critics' Circle in 2020.
