- California Doubling: Belgrade, Serbia, as an unlikely substitute for Florida. The biggest giveaway that it's not really Florida is the large, old, multistory wood-framed houses with basements: exceedingly rare in most of the state.
- Dawson Casting: 27-year-old Kaya Scodelario as a college student/athlete.
- Fake American: The British Kaya Scodelario and Morfydd Clark, and Canadian Barry Pepper, all play Florida natives.
- Not Screened for Critics: The film was not screened for critics, but received a positive reception nonetheless.
- What Could Have Been:
- The film would have originally opened up with a family trying to make it out of the hurricane only for their car to get flooded and falling victim to the gators, including the kids. While it was not filmed, a motion comic version is included in the home video release.
- At various points during production, the filmmakers thought about whether or not the dog should die. Various ideas included the dog sacrificing itself to Haley and Dave using the dog as bait/distraction to get away.
- Some versions of the script had the film end with either or both Haley and Dave eventually falling victim to the gators. Specifically, one version had the gator jump out of the water and pull the helicopter into the murky depths right at the end.
