  • Base-Breaking Character: The cast (Tony, Justin and Kieran) have proven to be quite divisive amongst fans. Some find them to be a good addition to the channel for helping James behind the scenes and find their banter back and forth funny. Others see them as Replacement Scrappies to Kyle and Bootsy, believing they lack charisma with not only James but with themselves, and find them to be annoying in their own way. note
  • Broken Base:
    • It's a divisive show. To some it’s a fun series of reviews with some memorable and funny moments from the hosts. To others it’s a bad ripoff of RedLetterMedia’s content with uninteresting hosts who talk over James and features a film selection far removed from what James would watch (such as Spice World and the Avengers movies being some of the more controversial choices).
    • The collab with Doug Walker and Brad Jones. Some found it as funny as the rest of the series, others were turned off by how James is still associating with Doug and Brad after the Change the Channel controversy.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Any time the duo mention that in a decade, they'll be following up a review with a newer film in the series. Unless the show gets revived, this isn't going to happen.
  • Memetic Mutation: James frequently uttering "mmhmm" and "yep".
    • "FIVE OF 'UM!" Explanation
  • Opinion Myopia: There have been a few examples:
    • Justin's favorite Vacation movie is Vegas Vacation. This is practically sacrilege, as many Vacation fans prefer either the original or Christmas Vacation.
    • James thinks Temple of Doom is the worst of the four Indy movies, and likes Crystal Skull more. This one isn't as bad- there are certainly some Indy fans who don't mind Crystal Skull- but there are just as many who refuse to acknowledge a fourth film even exists.
    • Of course, the whole Jurassic Park II vs. III review is built on this, although most of the people who took the Twitter poll sided with Kieran in saying The Lost World was the better of the two sequels, much to Tony's chagrin.
    • Justin doesn't like Caddyshack as a whole, though he admitted liking certain scenes. Again, a controversial opinion to hold, and one which Tony gave him crap for.
    • Justin again: He legitimately enjoys Mac and Me more than the film that inspired it, although part of that may be due to nostalgia.
    • In one Retail Reviews episode, Mike makes the case that the first Ninja Turtles game on NES is the best one, citing that there's strategy in switching between characters on the fly and likes the challenge. Needless to say, a lot of gamers prefer the second or third NES game instead.
  • The Scrappy: Lampshaded in one of the episodes, where Justin flat out says he's nobody's favorite character.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The intro to the Mortal Kombat Annihilation has a melody based on "Techno Syndrome".
    • Some episodes open with a piece that sounds like the Seinfeld theme.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: One of the reasons why the series is divisive is that it’s often unfavorably compared to a low rent version of RedLetterMedia’s Best of the Worst or Half In the Bag, right down to some of the movie choices.
