YMMV / Charmed S4E10 "A Paige from the Past"

Go To

  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: Leo's call for Clyde includes a reference to 'the Bog of Eternal Stench'. Is it a thing that also exists in the Charmed universe? Or is Leo just making a Labyrinth joke?
  • Award Snub: Many fans call foul that Rose McGowan didn't get an Emmy nomination for this, widely considered her strongest performance across the series.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Frankie and Lulu are prone to being viewed as more sympathetic than they actually are, given how their goal was to get married. This ignores that Frankie threatened Piper with a knife for making fun of Lulu's name, they robbed two shops and the wedding ceremony had the priest being held up at gunpoint. And that's not getting into the stuff they did when they were alive! It's only pure luck they didn't actually kill people this time around.
  • Evil Is Cool: Frankie and Lulu are a pair of Bonnie and Clyde-esque criminals who are very fun to watch.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Phoebe near the beginning of the episode says "am I the world's biggest bitch or what?" regarding her treatment of Cole. Come Season 5...
  • She Really Can Act: If there were ever any doubts about Rose McGowan being able to fill the void left by Shannen Doherty, or that she could only play the Deadpan Snarker, they were erased here. Her heartwrenching speech about the accident or her equally heart breaking reaction to witnessing it again demonstrates that she is a damn fine dramatic actress as well.
  • Tear Dryer:
    • Cole has to be shot by Darryl to stop Frankie from doing anything, and he lies bleeding to death without any sign of Leo. Piper calls for Clyde to return Leo and Paige, the former of whom heals Cole. Phoebe then softly asks Cole to propose again, and she accepts.
    • The ending is leaning on the bittersweet side, as Paige is still sad that her parents never got to see her grow up and become a better person. Cue Leo bringing in the spirits of her parents, who reveal that they know exactly what kind of woman Paige grew up to be and how proud they are of their daughter. Paige gets to hug her parents for the first time in ten years while her new family looks on smiling.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: It could have been nice to get a scene with Paige's old high school friend Michelle to see how she turned out in the future, and how their relationship changed after the accident.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: It's Played for Laughs but Darryl is against erasing evidence from the crime scene until Piper talks about how it will affect him. He was happy to let Phoebe and Cole - two innocent people possessed against their will - take the fall for crimes other people committed, knowing there would be no way to absolve them the legal way.
