YMMV / Blankets

Go To

  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • The book has a rather somber and down to earth tone... but the part in which Craig and his brother get in a pee fight in bed can be oddly hilarious from how gross it is.
    • Raina mentioned that she used to pretend having a dinner party with fake food... and would mention that she would sometimes "offer" her Strawberry Shortcake as a "sacrifice". The fact that Craig drew the doll with a sad face only further makes it happen.
  • Once Original, Now Common: While comic-book autobiographies weren't exactly new by the time this book was published (2003), it predated a lot of well known ones such as Smile (Raina Telgemeier). Its length and sexual themes were also quite shocking back in the day. In the days of animated storytime channels as well as numerous graphic novel autobiographies, Blankets can seem a little tame.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Downplayed - in the 2000s this book did face bans, but not quite to the level of those in The New '10s and The New '20s. Part of this was due to some parents opening the book to a few particular pages and taking it out of context. The fact that it came out at a time when the Catholic Church was under fire for hiding molestation cases certainly didn't help matters at all.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: The fact that Craig and his brother were molested, and that the babysitter's full face is never shown. Craig also never says specifically what the Babysitter did... and that makes it frightening.
  • Values Dissonance: This is pretty much a period piece in The '80s and The '90s. Craig's father can be seen as very abusive today, but would just be seen as "Strict" in the timeframe.
