YMMV / Between My Brother and Me: Mors Omnibus

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Was Chacu Challhua being earnest on the idea of not wanting to turn Ayu into a Dark Signer or was he just playing on her naivety?
      • In addition are the other Dark Signers really supportive of Ayu or are they just luring her into their little 'family'? Misty is the one who hits this most as she sees Toby in place of Ayu and her concern is either she really doesn't want Ayu to become like them or it's manipulation so she can make amends for not saving her little brother.
    • Was Yvonne actually hurt with Yuzu's words in the tenth chapter or was it just her being a Troll like usual? Considering her reaction to killing Yusho was to scream in agony and all...
    • At the end of 14.5th Show, Yusho starts laughing after he wakes up in the Sunken Realm when he realizes what he's done and what he agreed to. Is he laughing because of how hilarious it is, or given how he once told Yuya to "laugh when you feel like crying", is he laughing to stop himself from bursting into tears?
      • All of Yusho's behavior comes into a different light once you know that he was going to die and that he doesn't remember everything Yvonne told him because his Trigger Phrase wasn't activated. How much of his interactions with Yvonne was genuine? Did he accept Yvonne's invitation to duel with her out of free will or that was a command planted on him?note  When Yusho asked Yvonne to "Do it. Now." was it because that was supposed to be the plan or he just wanted Yvonne to kill him to spare him his suffering? Better yet, is his reasoning to die for Yvonne's plan because he's just that nice of a person or because he's known he fucked up and is Driven to Suicide?
    • Just how much does Yusho respect Yvonne? It's shown plenty of times that he is angry at her flippant attitude and the narration states he wanted to strangle her for making Sora repeatedly stab himself in the stomach. Yet throughout their tag-team duel, Yusho shows concern for Yvonne and even comforts her to accept their defeat. What blurs the line here is that Yvonne actually does respect Yusho and she also did hypnotize him so we don't know to the extent of how much she changed Yusho's mind.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Dawn being repurposed means that she will outlive her loved ones (barring May, Max and Brendan) and it's brought up multiple times from other people. That said, Dawn is aware of this despite her smile but she does her best to ignore it for the time being.
  • Awesome Ego: Yvonne Maxa aka the Grand Lorde Guignol is a loud, snarky Troll of a puppeteer who is known to murder people with a grin on her face yet is both loved and feared by the readers. As emphasis, she even sings the first verse of "I'm the Bad Guy" by another girl with an Awesome Ego, Lord Dominator.
  • Catharsis Factor: A lot of assholes in the anime gain some comeuppance here.
    • The deaths/carding of Obelisk Force would make many readers agree considering they were all pricks in the original anime.
    • For those who disliked Sora's attitude after he revealed his true colors, having himself become Yvonne's plaything is a relief.
    • Yusho being called out for abandoning his son also becomes this which many characters point out.
    • Himika's breakdown by the Dark Signers is absolutely satisfying for those who hate her abusive parenting towards Reira.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Yusei Fudo of this world is immensely popular due to the concept of him being a Dark Signer and his manipulation tactics on Reiji.
  • Genius Bonus: Brendan's codename is "Brother Nero". While it's a cheeky reference to Jeff Hardy (whose full name is Jeffrey Nero Hardy), the ability to channel fire brings to mind Emperor Nero, who famously played the fiddle while Rome burned. Brendan plays a bass guitar and when he was brainwashed by Yugo, Yugo commanded him that they have a city to burn.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: All of Yvonne's interactions with Yusho becomes this when you learn that Yusho agreed to let himself be repurposed — aka die and be resurrected by Wiraqocha Rasca — and that she has to kill him for this to happen. Better yet, when you reread many of Yvonne's interactions with Yuzu, you can see that Yvonne is doing her best to hide her discomfort.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Ash's most powerful monster is Wattaildragon. The Pokémon Journeys anime shows that Ash now has a fully-evolved Dragon Pokémon of his own: Dragonite.
      • Ash using his Aura powers more in this story becomes this in hindsight as the 21st episode of Pokémon Journeys has Ash using his Aura powers again as a plot point with Riolu.
    • One of the members of the band "The Obsolete Men" is Hilda, on drums. Yu-Gi-Oh! SEVENS reveals that one of the main characters, Romin Kirishima, who's also in a band (although she's the lead guitarist while the role for that in the fanfic is Hilda's brother Hilbert). Even more hilarious is that Hilda actually steps up to the mike to sing, whereas it's implied that Romin can't.
    • When dueling Yuzu, Xavier questions why the Fabled don't have any more cards, or at least a Spell or Trap Card. The chapter was updated during the time the Blazing Vortex booster pack was announced that has new Fabled cards — one of them a Field Spell the other a Trap.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Yvonne Maxa is a 14-year-old snarky puppeteer who has no qualms with murdering people or stating her honest opinion on them. 14th Show reveals that she's reeling from her brother's coma and tells Lady Belladonna that she cannot go back from her path of being Grand Lorde Guignol and is shown feeling uncomfortable in regards to "something" that she has to do. The end of 14.5th Show reveals what this something is: her killing Yusho Sakaki so he can become the Dark Signer of the Condor after the two of them have shown getting along well, as the chapter ends with her crying at what she's done. This girl clearly needs a hug after this.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Rin allying with Zarc and then staring in glee as Dawn loses her soul to Zarc has made her cross this.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • The end of the prologue has Yvonne/Grand Lorde Guignol making an entrance by having her puppets murder three Obelisk Force soldiers to signify that this is not your ordinary story.
    • 1st Show: Yvonne and her puppets murdering Academia students before she goes toe-to-toe with Sora...and ends up turning him into a puppet!
    • 6th Show Ayu Ayukawa is killed and becomes resurrected as the Dark Signer of the Whale.
    • 13th Show has three duels (five if you counted Lusamine's and Trip and Bianca's) at the same time and two of their opponents are Sherry LeBlanc and Yusuke Fujiwara!
      • It also showcases Yuto using Synchro Summoning Spectral Wing Synchro Dragon.
    • 14th Show and 14.5th Show is an epic two-part duel that is said to be the beginning of the end of everything. And the author's not kidding. Metawise: she states this is the longest she has ever written at 58K words and being so big that she had no choice to split it into two parts. In-universe: Not only is this a tag-team duel on an Action Field with Yvonne and Yusho dueling Yuya and Zarc highlights include: Yusho having Pendulum monsters and shows off Xyz Summoning, Yvonne showing off Zefra monsters and subsequently unleashing a Pendulum Link Summoning, a climatic battle at a carousel, Yvonne killing Yusho in front of a live audience and the last scene Yusho encountering Wiraqocha Rasca with the hints that he's going to be the Dark Signer of the Condor. HOLY. SHIT.
    • 16th Show and 16.5th Show: Ray reveals herself, Rin decides to ally herself with Zarc and not only defeats Dawn, Zarc takes Dawn's soul. Ruri, in retaliation, decides to join with Ray.
  • Signature Scene: Yvonne killing Yusho at the end of 14.5th Show
