YMMV / Arawn

Go To

  • Awesome Art: Even though this story may not be for everyone to enjoy, the artwork made by Sebastian Garnier is simply phenomenal.
  • Complete Monster: Engus, only blood brother of Arawn, eventually proves himself to be the worst of the four brothers. Already a conniving sadist who mocks his half-brother Math over his heritage and takes over the kingdom of the East by dishonorably assassinating its king and its consorts, Engus becomes a pedophilic despot and hedonist who leads non-stop orgies in his castle and brutalizes his subordinates. Engus is eventually tricked into seemingly dying at the hands of his other half-brother Kern upon being plunged into the Cauldron—but upon absorbing the Cauldron's power, Engus becomes a living god who murders his brother and has his entire kingdom massacred. Drunk on power, Engus leads his armies to devastate all in their wake and sacrifice thousands of innocents to the Cauldron of Blood—regardless of age—even murdering his own blood brother and parading his body around as a depraved trophy.
  • Evil Is Cool:
    • Arawn, in his Dark Lord form at least. However, as impressive as his power and Scary Impractical Armor is, he's actually a Stoic Woobie.
    • Engus in his "divine" form also qualifies, despite him being an abhorrent bastard.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Its debatable where Math crossed it, rather than if: killing Arawn's wolf Sohrja, murdering his own royal predecessor's children to prevent any future rebellions, raping Deirdre in her wedding ceremony, kidnapping her and holding her hostage for the Cauldron, turning her into his Sex Slave or killing her son with Arawn. Siahm herself may have crossed it too when she sided with him against Arawn despite the horrible things Math did.
    • Engus fly over this line when he is revealed to be a degenerated hedonist who performs orgies in his castle and even has little girls offered to him (though thankfully, the reader doesn't see it happen since he is interrupted before anything untoward happen to the poor child, but its clear what his intents were). He becomes so much worse after absorbing the Cauldron's power and becoming a god, he begins sacrificing innocents by the droves, including children.
    • Deirdre crossed it when she kills her innocent son Duncan and cooks his body for his father to eat it.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Volume 5 ends with Arawn dying in a single duel with his brother Engus for control of the Cauldron. Yeah, right... The guy telling the whole story in the comic won't stay dead.
  • Narm: The English translations are very shoddy and some of the dialogue and narration comes across as very stiff and reaching You No Take Candle territory, which ruins any epic or sad moment. The final volume managed to avert this.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: It may be hard as it is to get invested given the Foregone Conclusion, but this trope comes into play due the fact that the story is extremely bleak and none of the characters come out clean including characters like Siahm who have the best intentions, but end up make things so much worse for everyone else.
