- Crossing the Line Twice: A lot of the comedy comes from the Spoof Aesop lessons that Jerri learns in each episode being deliberately horrible to the point of hilarity.
- Cult Classic: Although the show was canceled only three seasons in, the series was popular enough to get its own prequel movie in 2005. The series also made it to TV Guide's Top Cult Shows Ever list.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: In one episode David Cross plays a psychiatrist. This might be the closet we see to Tobias practicing psychiatry.
- LGBT Fanbase: Gained a strong queer following due to Chuck Noblet and Geoffrey Jellineck being a highly sympathetic closeted gay couple during a time when LGBT characters were still extremely rare on television.
- Memetic Mutation:
- Noblet going apeshit on his student is commonly posted in response to posts the user disagrees with.
- A gif of Noblet removing his glasses while shaking his head in disapproval is a popular reaction image on forums and Message Boards.
- Nightmare Fuel: The expression on the face of the shoe salesman as he asks Melissa to step into the back with him, calling her the name of the woman he is implied to have murdered and buried under his shoe store.
- Retroactive Recognition: Chris Pratt was in the movie four years before his Star-Making Role in Parks and Recreation.
