Contra Unit was a heel stable that operated in MLW.
The stable had its early roots in the independent circuit when Josef Samael teamed up with a member of the legendary Anaoi family Jacob Fatu as Warbeast to which they dominated for so many years. Later on, they made their MLW debuts in 2019 dismantling most of the roster along the way. Later on, they added in new members such as Simon Gotch, Mads Krugger, Ikuro Kwon, and Daivari as well as nameless members of the Sentai Death Squad who often carry the victims in body bags.
The faction met their demise after their defeat in the War Chamber at the hands of the Hammerheads as well as the infighting between Jacob Fatu and Mads Krugger. However, later in 2022, both Mads Krugger and Ikuro Kwon has since reunited and teased a new incarnation of the faction with new members being added in the future.
At least that was until Kwon left and the whole thing was dropped. With Krugger now gone from MLW, a reunion or reboot is unlikely.
However, Krugger did in fact return in 2024, now as Mads Krule Krugger and brought the faction back with him, though currently it solely consists of him and the members of Sentai Death Squad. Until the return of Ikuro Kwon at War Chamber 2024.
Crusaders of Nihilistic Tropes Revolution Armada:
- Acronym and Abbreviation Overload: CONTRA Unit's full name is apparently "Crusaders of Nihilistic Terror Revolution Armada" Unit.
- Arch-Enemy: All of MLW. Most notably; Alexander Hammerstone, Injustice, the Hart Foundation, the Von Erichs, Tom Lawlor, Low Ki, Los Parks and by extension Promociones Dorado. It eventually bite them in the ass when they took over MLW during the COVID hiatus when most of their enemies teamed up to take out the Sentai Death Squad and take MLW back in time for The Restart.
- Ax-Crazy: Everyone in the stable is devoted to inflicting violence on their enemies.
- Big Bad: Fulfills this role as of late in MLW, especially Jacob Fatu being the World Champion for almost 2 years.
- Dragon Ascendant: With Samael missing and Fatu splitting with the group, Contra is now under the Black Hand of Mads Krugger.
- Evil Old Folks: Josef Samael is in his 40s, but loves to torture the victims of Contra Unit's assaults. He even loves throwing fireballs in the faces of any of the hapless victims of these beatdowns. Hell, one of them was how Fenix got written off alongside brother Pentagon Jr.
- Expy: Was sort of MLW's version of Warbeast, Fatu and Samael's stable on the independent scene.
- Faceless Goons: The Sentai Death Squad.
- The Ghost: Akihisa Mera has been mentioned as Ikuro Kwon’s boss and mentor, but has never been seen onscreen. If that is his real name, he could possibly be retired wrestling legend; The Great Kabuki, which would explain Kwon’s use of “Asian” mist.
- Guest-Star Party Member: Daivari was the only other member of Contra to have wrestled in major wrestling companies like WWE and Impact Wrestling aside from Simon Gotch and was only in the group to fill in Josef Samael's spot when he couldn't come to events during the Covid/Empty Arena episodes of Fusion.
- Hate Sink: Contra Unit has quickly established themselves as this. Their attack on Tom Lawlor after his cage match with Low Ki and their beatdown of Ace Romero after his match with Simon Gotch got thrown out drew massive heat. It went up to eleven after Jacob Fatu and Josef Samael's beatdown of a jobber tag team got so heated that fans began throwing garbage into the ring and forced arena security in Chicago to act in order to stop irate fans from rushing the ring.
- Hero Killer: In kayfabe, they are responsible for the removal of several MLW wrestlers, like CIMA, Air Wolf, Teddy Hart, Kotto Brazil, Pentagón Jr., Rey Fenix, and Ace Romero.
- Terrorists Without a Cause: Basically their gimmick, though they refer to themselves as “international dealers of violence”, the commentators refer to them as “mercenaries” and Samael claims they believe in nothing but violence.
- Traumatic Haircut: Contra's Josef Samael gave Tom Lawlor one after he and Jacob Fatu jumped Lawlor and kidnapped him during the MLW Fury Road special.
- Vile Villain, Laughable Lackey: While the main members of CONTRA are all threats on their own, the Sentai Death Squad soldiers are low level Mooks who are sent against their enemies just to be crushed.
- We Can Rule Together: On MLW Fusion #79, Samael offered this to Salina de la Renta. She refused of course.
