Goth Girl and the Jock is a web comic by Merryweatherey, featuring the unlikely friendship between the popular jock Tyler and a lonely gothic girl named Ophelia.

The comic is available on Webtoon and Merryweatherey's Twitter page.

Goth Girl and the Jock contains examples of...:

  • All of the Other Reindeer: As of chapter 20 its shown that not only is Ophelia actively shunned by her peers, she's also the subject of bullying from the local Girl Posse. Said girl posse dumped their drink on both her and a love letter she was in the middle of writing for Tyler.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: When asked why, this is Ophelia's reason for clinging onto Tyler.
  • Big Man on Campus: Tyler is the school's star quarterback, but as a result his team feels the need to police his potential friendships and relationships out of concern for his reputation as the local man's man.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: After overhearing Tyler calling her a freak to his friends, Ophelia refuses to accept Tyler's false pity friendship and tells him to leave her alone.
  • False Friend: Ophelia comes to see Tyler as this after she overheard him passively allowing his teammates to make fun of her when she was on her way to give him a drawing as a thank you for hanging out with her. Later when Ophelia is locked in her room, her mom tells her that a friend is there to see her, which causes Ophelia to get scared and think that the girls who bullied her and started the rumor that she slept with a teacher are there to make fun of her, with the implication that they pretended to be her friend at some point as a set up for a prank, only for Tyler to say he wants to see her.
  • Friendless Background: Before meeting Tyler, Ophelia had zero friends to hang out with her.
  • Friendship Denial: After some teasing, Tyler grudgingly agrees with his friends that Ophelia is just some annoying Goth that won't leave him alone, which devastates her when she overhears him say that, causing her to yell at him to "Leave Me Alone!" When Tyler goes over to Ophelia's house, he stays over for dinner, and they take a walk around her neighborhood afterwards, where Ophelia tells him that although she appreciates him worrying about her, he should stop pretending to care and not pity her anymore.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Ophelia is two heads shorter than Tyler.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: The reason why Olivia started following around Tyler is because he was the first person in school to approach her, even if it was out of pity, as opposed to everyone else who ignored her. However, after she overheard him allow his friends to insult her, she yelled at him to stay away from her.
  • Jerkass Realization: Just as Tyler was going to deal the finishing blow to one of the Jocks who made fun of Ophelia, he realizes that he's the only one responsible for alienating Ophelia.
  • Leave Me Alone!: Ophelia tells Tyler to fuck off and leave her alone after he failed to defend her from his jock friends and calling her a freak behind her back.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Ophelia is seen as this by everyone in the high school, including her love interest.
  • Motherly Side Plait: Rather worryingly, Ophelia's mother can be seen with this.
  • My Girl Is Not a Slut: As it turns out, Tyler's teammates are constantly putting down Ophelia, not because she's a "goth freak", but because they had heard gossip from some of the girls in class that Ophelia may have slept with one of her teachers for a passing grade and they were just putting in the reasonable effort to make sure Tyler's reputation doesn't take a hit from him getting involved with her. Tyler storms off and blows off what he just heard as bullshit rumors.
  • Odd Friendship: The comic stars the friendship between Tyler, a popular jock beloved by everyone in the school and the gothic outcast Ophelia, this being lampshaded when they go on a date in the mall. Sadly, the bond breaks apart when Tyler fails to defend her from his jock friends.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Despite being lonely, Ophelia still attended class regularly. After their fallout, Tyler notices that something has gone very wrong with her, as her chair is empty.
  • Perky Goth: Though initially dark and brooding, Ophelia becomes this after spending more time with Tyler.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: Ophelia tries to ungoth herself with spectacularly bad results. Realizing he likes her just how she was before, Tyler gives in and invites her to a date to the mall to help pick out some clothes for her.
  • Sextra Credit: One of the reasons why Ophelia doesn't have any friends, aside from Tyler, is because some of the more popular girls started a rumor that she slept with a teacher to pass a class.
  • Shout-Out: Tyler bursting into Ophelia's room to return her pen to her is framed exactly like Jack Nicholson chopping through the bathroom door in The Shining.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Already feeling guilty from driving Ophelia away, and not wanting to Tyler tells one of his friend jocks to shut the fuck up before attacking him.
  • Stripperific: With her spaghetti strap top, middrift and short skirt, Ophelia would likely be violating the dress code of any real life high school.
  • Stylistic Suck:
    • When we first see Tyler interacting with Ophelia, she's drawing her OC Jack Kurosakisaki, a handsome brooding demon hunter with a heart of gold.
    • Ophelia also invites Tyler to listen to the new metal album she bought. Bonk From Hell's Go To Horny Hell. The album art features one red eyed Shiba Inu clobbering another with a crucifix.
  • Third-Act Misunderstanding: Having failed to stand up for Ophelia while his football team are trash talking her, Tyler is told off by her while she's in tears. Ophelia is a no show in class the next day. Tyler spends this next day violently retaliating as his team trash talks her further, and is then told a salacious rumor as their explanation as to why they're so reproachful of her.
  • Traumatic Haircut: The reason why Ophelia has two short twin-tails adorned by hair ribbons is because some of the girls that bullied her beat her up and held her down as they cut off some of her hair.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Ophelia delivers a huge one to Tyler, finishing it by telling him to leave her alone.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Tyler's Jock friends congratulate him for destroying his friendship with Ophelia to the point of making her skip class. Already feeling guilty for driving her away, Tyler doesn't take their congratulations very well...
