Nyarly's YouTube and Twitter avatar

Nyarly is a Shin Megami Tensei based YouTuber, best known for his challenge run videos and demon analysis videos about said games. His channel REALLY blew up in January of 2020, with his "Can You Beat Persona 3 With Only Orpheus?" video, jumping from a thousand or so subcribers to some 50,000. Since then, he's done other challenges, like Persona 4 with only Izanagi and Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne without buffs or debuffs (which turned out to be hardest of the 3, taking 4 videos overall and couldn't even be beaten without cheats.)

Can You Read TV Tropes Without Ruining Your Life?

  • Ambiguously Christian: He's mentioned growing up in an all white Southern Baptist family. He's never elaborated on whether or not he's still Christian, but given the knowledge of The Bible he's demonstrated in his "Demons of Shin Megami Tensei" series, it can't be ruled out.
  • All for Nothing: How he saw getting to Kagutsuchi in Nocturne, as he wasn't able to beat him without buffs and/or debuffs. Subverted when he cut the knot and just cheat coded his way to victory.
  • Cutting the Knot: How he eventually got around to finishing the Nocturne no buffs challenge. He admits to it putting the legitimacy of his run into question, but ultimately lets the viewer decide if cheating in a challenge run is worse than breaking the rules of the challenge run. He also admits that, had he not activated the cheat codes, it probably would've been possible with a lot of grinding, but it would've taken way too long.
  • Deadpan Snarker: His MSTing of the Fridge Logic in SMT games usually involves some sort of sarcastic comment.
  • Deep South: He says he's from Georgia, though you'd only barely notice it with his accent. It's more noticeable when he says certain words, like "my party."
  • Determinator: In his challenge videos. Admittedly, the Persona themed ones are significantly easier, but you still have to give him credit for the sheer hell he put himself through by playing ALL of Nocturne without ANY buffs or debuffs.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: He tends to avoid swearing, either censoring it with the YHVH sound effect from Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, or just using a family friendly variant. Justified, as swearing heavily runs the chance of getting his videos demonetized.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has one in the third part of his Nocturne no buffs challenge run, where he can't seem to find a workaround to Kagutsuchi's Infinite Light attack without either debuffing the boss, or buffing himself.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Many viewers were caught off guard by how little his voice fits his appearance when he first showed his face on his main channel while discussing the Steam port of Persona 4 Golden.
  • Vocal Evolution: In his earlier 2019 videos, his voice was slightly deeper and more monotonous. Around 2020, his voice changed to be more influxing and higher pitched in tone.
