Memory Hole is an online Clip Show created by the people behind Everything Is Terrible!. According to the one of the creators in a VICE interview, the group was given, through some unknown means or connections, a MASSIVE collection of VHS tapes, all of them being rejected home movies/audition tapes for "the longest-running primetime television program in history." Why exactly were all these tapes rejected?
Reasons ranging from just being boring and unfunny to straight up horrifying and EXTREMELY bizarre.
As such, in a similar vein to their various compilation videos and movies from their regular name, the group has compiled all of these tapes into various videos, many of which have themes (however vague or not) which the tapes chosen for that video pertain to. The result is something that crosses the border between bewilderingly hilarious and nightmarishly warped.
You can find their YouTube channel here.
Memory Hole gives examples of:
- Abusive Parents: Though it could just be a case of lack of context, parents being neglectful or outright scarring their children intentionally is a weirdly common occurence in these videos. For example, the children being stuck in the toilet and metallic bin crying their eyes out in stuck.
- Clip Show: Much like their regular stuff, alot of the videos are compilations of various rejected VHS tapes.
- Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: While it's clear these tapes were meant to be for AFV, the context and reasoning behind what went into them is largely absent.
- Mind Screw: Much of the original tapes are already weirdly bizarre and unnerving. EIT edits them to go even further.
- Monster Clown: clown town.
- Our Lawyers Advised This Trope: In the VICE interview above, one of the creators says they're not allowed to distinct what show these tapes were for. But given he referred to it as "the longest-running primetime television program in history," it's pretty clear what show he's talking about.
- Stylistic Suck: A lot of these tapes aren't exactly professionally produced.
- Surreal Humor
- Surreal Horror: Back-and-forths between Surreal Humor and this.
- Uncanny Valley: Setting aside the edits EIT does, a lot of these videos seem to be full of people acting in weirdly bizarre manners, putting on weird and unnatural faces or masks and costumes, and give off extremely uncomfortable vibes.
- What Could Have Been: The vast majority of these tapes were rejected by AFV, and so were left to rot in storage. However, some of the tapes in this collection actually DID make it to air (albeit edited), most notably the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fluffer.
