The events of the game as we see them are Jack Marston's interpretation of the Dime Novel he's been reading.
In Redemption, Jack describes a book he's reading with a plot that's very like this game's. The reason Red Harlow and John Marston look so alike is because Jack projects his father's image into the story, since he's the first person Jack pictures when he thinks of The Gunslinger.
