WMG / American Horror Story: 1984

Go To

Lana Winters will make an appearance at the end of the season, or during the season
Her appearance could be something like Roanoke as she could be interviewing the survivor. Especially that Sarah Paulson has a limited role this year, it would be possible, and a nice surprise.
  • Jossed. Sarah Paulson doesn't end up appearing at all.

Emma Robert’s character is the Nice Girl
Judging by the character teasers, she doesn’t seem bitchy compared to the other characters Roberts has played in the past.
  • Confirmed.

The theme of 1984 will be lust
This is also related to the nine circles of hell theory which is a popular theory in AHS. Teen films of the 1980s had the message that teenage sex was something to be frowned upon, and sexually promiscuous teenagers were killed in horror movies, and the Final Girl, usually a virgin is left to confront the killer. The characters could be sexually active and will most likely be killed off, and the possible virgin character will be left alive.
  • Jossed, pretty much. While pious Margaret is established as a past final girl and virginal Brooke has the hallmarks, there are too many subversions in the set-up for the series to actually follow traditional horror mores.

The series isn't really set in the 80s; it's a film set or a Cabin in the Woods scenario
The character introduction videos look a lot like casting videos.
  • This would explain why it's called 1984 and not Summer Camp, when the previous seasons set in the past (Asylum and Freak Show) were named for their setting and not their year. The actual novum is that everyone has been brainwashed to believe it's 1984.
  • That would require far more than trapping everyone at Camp Redwood; We've seen crowds of people in many locations as the show has gone on, including Alaska; even in AHS, I doubt any group has the resources to brainwash that many people and not have any hiccups.
    • Jossed

George Orwell's name will appear in some capacity as a background gag
As a wink and a nod to those who thought that the series would be based on Nineteen Eighty-Four when only the title was announced.

In a Bait-and-Switch, it'll turn out Mister Jingles is female and always has been
I know I'm probably way off here, but humor me; "Mister Jingles" was the name given to the killer by the public before they were caught and, due to finding the murders so gruesome, people assumed it had to be a fearsome brute of a man. Even after the killer turned out to be female, the name stuck. I wouldn't be surprised if the show pulled such a twist, since it would be playing with a trope and including a strange, goofy element. Again, probably not the case, but I expect there to be some kind of curveball in the works anyway.
  • OP: Yup, I was way off. Jossed.
  • Actually, kind of Confirmed, from a certain point of view; Margaret committed the murders back in the day and framed Benjamin Richter, thus meaning she's the "real" killer from that night, even if Richter is Mr. Jingles.

Margaret's a serial killer, too.
She's voiced a desire to enforce morality, and in 80s slasher tropes, that much judgmental religion suggests she's not a good guy. Add to it that her story of losing her ear's fishy, and she's clearly got something going on...
  • Alternately, she's a one-time spree killer, who actively colluded with Jingles to massacre the other counselors in retaliation for some real or imagined slight. He only took her ear and left her for dead because once the adrenaline wore off, she was horrified to witness the aftermath of the violence she'd unleashed, so was going to turn him in. Her determination to see Jonas's ghost banished from camp is because Jonas witnessed Margaret participating in the 1970 killings, and she's afraid he'll recover that memory and come after and/or expose her.
  • Sort of confirmed. The only part of this that isn't correct is that Margaret colluded with Jingles - in fact, Margaret did the killing all on her own and just framed Benjamin for it.

We have at least three serial killers in play, possibly more.
Mr. Jingles is still in the hospital while the cast drives to camp, and the Night Stalker is implied to be following them. This means neither killer could have cut off the hitchhiker's ear.
  • Jossed. Jonas's ear is missing because Mr. Jingles cut it off him 14 years ago as he was dying. He was so horrified to see the injury because he hadn't yet realized that he's a ghost when he looked in the mirror.

Around Episode 3, it'll be revealed that the story so far is a movie.
The rest of the season will be about a real life Mr Jingles terrorizing the cast and crew as they film on location. Much of the cast will be the opposite of the characters they play, Brooke's actress will be one of Emma Roberts' usual bitchy characters, Mr Jingles' actor will be a soft-spoken nice guy, etc.
  • Jossed that it would happen in Episode 3, but there's still time....
  • If it is a movie, it's a lot longer than you'd expect it to be, and lacks any indication that it is.
    • Jossed: It's not a movie. The real twist is that contrary to both AHS and slasher-flick tradition, it has a happy ending ... for an AHS standard of "happy", at least.

Brooke’s account of her wedding day is false.
Whether she is willfully lying or she’s blocked out the memory, what Brooke told Montana isn’t what really happened. What actually happened is that Brooke is the one who went on a shooting/killing spree, having found out her fiancé was sleeping with his best friend. Montana laying a kiss on Brooke was to subtly enforce a connection between Brooke having a negative reaction to homosexual attraction and her deadly wedding day.
  • Montana, despite wanting to kill Brooke because of her brother's death, doesn't think she committed the murders herself. Since she likely knows some of what happened for sure, it's likely that Brooke is mostly accurate in her account. Why would Montana not bring up her "lies" to Ramirez?
    • Also, police were perfectly capable of testing hands for gunpowder residue in 1984.

Margaret is the real killer and framed Benjamin
Benjamin says he can’t remember killing the campers, Margaret weirdly asks if Dr. Hopple was gonna go through her room, Margaret has a similar coat AND the hiker said he didn’t SEE Jingles. He only HEARD him. I’m 80-90% sure that Margaret killed the campers and then framed Mr. Jingles.
  • Confirmed!

Montana is part of a Satanic cult with Richard Ramirez, and wants to kill Brooke as part of a ritual.
Ramirez is a Satanist. Brooke is (allegedly) a virgin, which Montana figured out at aerobics class. Montana wants Brooke dead already because of some kind of Satanic pact made between her and Ramirez.
  • Jossed. Montana met Ramirez at work, and wants to kill Brooke since she blames her for her brother being killed by Brooke's fiancé.

Everyone is in their own Ironic Hell.
Everyone at Camp Redwood has committed a terrible crime and are being punished for it.
  • Brooke is responsible for the massacre at her wedding.
    • Jossed by this point.
  • Margaret is responsible for the Mr. Jingles murders.
    • Confirmed.
  • Ray is already confirmed as a killer, however accidentally.
  • Donna's collaboration with serial killers.
  • Montana's alliance with the Night Stalker.
  • Xavier's porn career.
  • Chet's drug abuse.

The Night Stalker is Michael Langdon's predecessor
Seems to be close to be confirmed, since Satan brought him back from the dead. Richard Ramirez died in 2013 though, and Michael Langdon was born in 2011.
  • Indeterminate. Richard Ramirez seems to have the favor of Satan, but his supernatural powers are extremely limited. He's also still alive in 2019.

The season is really about Margaret's hellish summer camp
Margaret will run a totalitarian summer camp, calling herself Big Sister. The slasher movie plot will wrap up halfway through the season.
  • Jossed. Camp Redwood was closed down.

Ramirez won't permanently kill anyone on-screen.
Yes, he killed people off-screen, and yes, he took Jonas out (twice) on a temporary basis. But so far, the writers have been having fun letting Mr. Jingles, the slasher-movie version of a Serial Killer, hack up victims right and left in every single episode, while the actual historical killer keeps missing his targets. Indeed, so far we've seen the camp staff kill more people (Ray killing a frat pledge in flashback, Xavier mercy-killing Bertie, Trevor knocking a townie into the pit trap, Margaret knifing Trevor and Xavier, Brooke stabbing Montana in self-defense) than the Night Stalker has!

Xavier and Margaret have AIDS or at least HIV+
Since its the 80s Xavier is a former drug addict and has had presumably unprotected sex while doing porn it is very likely that he is HIV+ while in the show Margaret has fatally stabbed Xavier and later stabbed herself with the same knife that still Xavier's blood on it it is likely that she has gotten it from him.
  • Most likely jossed, since the possibility never comes up with Xavier and Margaret is apparently in perfect health come 1989.
The next episode will feature a time jump and Brooke will be played by Sarah Paulson
The promo for the next episode shows that the camp has a Keep Out sign which means that it has been abandoned and we don’t know for how long. Sarah is supposed to appear in a reduced role. So we could time jump to the 90s or 2000s and see an older Brooke played by Sarah Paulson.
  • Jossed, at least about it happening within the next episode. The time jump is only 5 years and Brooke is still played by Emma Roberts.
  • Jossed, Sarah Paulson has confirmed that she will not be in the season.

History's account of Richard Ramirez's death from cancer isn't invalidated by these events, just deceived due to Satan getting back at a bumbling wannabe.
We see how Bruce (the thumbless killer) was mortally wounded and tossed down a hill, to roll across the Camp's boundaries and die permanently. But we also know that Bruce hung on every word Ramirez said like a fanboy, and that he observed Richard's prayers to Satan at least once. Possibly, bleeding out in the forest and realizing he was damned no matter what he did, Bruce made a last ditch attempt to call on Richard's boss to save his life, begging to be made whole so he could build upon the Night Stalker's legacy. Wishing to tie off the telltale loose ends created by how Richard had used his Satanic powers to escape, but not thrilled at being pestered by the un-servile demands of a petty wannabe who treated killing like a mere hobby, Satan restored Bruce to bodily wholeness as a one-time gift ... but, in the process, transformed him into the spitting image of Richard Ramirez. Next time Bruce strode into a bar or a skating rink expecting to pass unnoticed until he could single out a victim or two, he was IDed as the Night Stalker and given his turn to have the crap kicked out of him by a mob, before being dragged back to Ramirez's vacant cell on Death Row. Any attempt he made to deny he was Richard just got brushed off as more ridiculous B.S., albeit a change of pace from the "devil-worship" nonsense the convicted prisoner usually spewed. Bruce had wanted nothing more out of life than to emulate the Night Stalker ... and he got to do exactly that, for more than two decades, before his Satan-altered body finally succumbed to cancerous mutations left over from his physical transformation.
  • Bruce could have somehow made it to the Hotel Cortez and meet Mr. March before getting thrown back in the slammer. He's the ghost that visits the place for the serial killer "summit", thus tying up all the supposed plot holes.
    • Which serves him right, because even the killings he commits posthumously at the Cortez will be chalked up to Ramirez, not him. So much for ever breaking the Night Stalker's tally...
The Night Stalker was supposed to teach Michael
We know that Satan has heavily favored Ramirez to the point that it's a joke that he ignored Michael in favor of him, but what if it wasn't to ignore Michael but planning ahead? What if Ramirez was supposed to be taught everything that Michael would need in order to truly ascend as the anti-christ but he got locked down at the camp and was unable to teach Michael. Due to this and the fact that Satan didn't have a back up in mind he had to make due with Mead and the Satanic cult who gave him a less then adequate education.
