Tetris, now with extra character! Characters

Tetris Battle Gaiden (translated as Tetris Battle Spinoff) is a Tetris spin-off released by Bullet Proof Software for the Super Nintendo in 1993.

There is no single-player campaign as this game is strictly a competitive affair. The player plays against either the series of computer opponents or another player.

A notable feature of this particular game are the addition of different playable characters, each with their own stories and magical abilities. Battle Gaiden is markedly different from normal Tetris through the addition of orbs and magical abilities. By creating lines with magical orbs in them, the player gains the ability to use magic, with the more potent spells requiring more orbs. Each of the playable characters have their own magic spells that may affect opponents and gameplay, such as shifting the blocks to one side, or destroying your opponents blocks and creating gaps. Battles play out in a best-of-three matches.

The game was only released in Japan, but has since been translated.

Tetris Battle Gaiden contains examples of:

  • Big Boo's Haunt: Fitting for Halloween, his stage takes place in a Haunted house, dubbed the Halloween House, where Ghosts and Witches reside.
  • Bunnies for Cuteness: Mirurun is a very cute pink bunny, but that doesn't make him any less tougher as an opponent.
  • Funny Animal: Wolfman is an anthropomorphic wolf samurai. His special skill is utting off the top three rows of his stack.
  • Green Hill Zone: Mirurun's level takes place in a verdant carrot patch.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: Princess can aim a magical laser that destroys a column of blocks.
  • Pumpkin Person: Halloween's head is a Jack O' Lantern.
  • The Smurfette Principle: Princess is the only female playable character of the eight. Though not the only female character in the game...
