Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten is a turn-based RPG released by Aquaplus for PC (2022) and both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 (2023). It is a direct prequel to Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and focuses on the story of Oshtor and his rise to humble country beginnings to being named Imperial Guard of the Right while encountering other characters and witnessing many events that lead into Mask of Deception.

The story begins with Oshtor meditating on Mount Tabari when he's requested by the owlo of Ennakamuy to investigate some unusual disturbances with livestock being killed and crops being stolen. He soon encounters a young girl who is being pursued by soldiers in unknown uniforms. But, even more surprising, the girl named Shunya also informs Oshtor that his long-dead father, Pashpakur, is really alive and that she is his sister! In order to solve the mystery and learn the truth of his father, Oshtor joins Shunya in order to seek out and solve the mystery of the forbidden land of Arva Shulan, where Shunya was born, and soon finds himself learning of many of Yamato's deepest secrets in the process.

Beware unmarked spoilers for Mask of Deception.

Monochrome Mobius provides examples of the following:

  • Anti-Frustration Features: When the party is at a high-enough level above the enemies in an area, the enemies will not only ignore or run away from the party, but striking them will result in an instant win with full experience, money, and item drops.
  • Beef Gate: If the party attempts to travel to the Wasalam Desert too early, they'll be stopped by a squad of monster exterminators from the capital out to hunt a particular beast. Once access to the desert is open, it's possible to find the squad decimated by an Awa-Nnaki, which can't be beaten until reaching Level 45 or so. Attempting to fight it right away will result in an immediate defeat.
  • Black Mage: Shunya's primary role in battle is dishing out attack damage and hitting the enemies with debuffs. She can heal in a pinch, but only target single characters.
  • Coming of Age Story: As the story progresses, all three of Oshtor, Munechika, and Mikazuchi grow from headstrong young adults yearning for adventure into capable Mononofu and national heroes.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: The game makes sure to showcase several events that characters talk about having happened in Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth, including Oshtor not being a very good archer, why Nekone does not like Mikazuchi, how Munechika became Anju's educator, and so on. It even touches on a few subjects featured in the original such as purple amber, especially it's nature.
  • Guest-Star Party Member:
    • Dikotoma will join the party for one of the game's side quests to slay a monster nearby. He'll help out against and one-shot any regular enemies they encounter during the climb.
    • Raiko joins the party to traverse the final dungeon and surprises everyone, including those who played Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth by proving himself very capable in battle.
  • Glass Cannon: Mikazuchi has the highest speed and attack stats, but his lackluster HP, defense, and spirit stats mean he won't be taking more than one or two hits until using BP to make up for the shortfalls.
  • Kill It with Fire: Shunya's primary element, though she has access to others, her super move also utilizes fire.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Oshtor's attack and speed are second only to Mikazuchi's and he's able to take quite a few more hits.
  • Making a Splash: All of Oshtor's elemental attacks are water-based.
  • Mighty Glacier: Munechika has the highest natural HP and defense growth, but also the lowest speed. She is also primarily a support character and healer rather than a damage dealer.
  • Naked First Impression: Nekone traveling to the capital to visit Oshtor results in stumbling onto a drunken revelry in Dikotoma's residence where the men have all stripped naked. Mikazuchi's attempt at introducing himself to Oshtor's little sister earns him a trauma-inducing Groin Attack... twice!
  • Sequel Hook: The game ends with Oshtor and Halu finding that Shunya has been possessed by an unknown entity that calls itself Tezcatlipoca, as well as leaving multiple questions about the inhabitants of Arva Shulan and their relationship with Shunya unanswered.
  • Shock and Awe: Mikazuchi's primary element is lightning, allowing him to shock enemies and repeatedly damage groups with timed bolts.
  • Superboss: Starting in Chapter 8, the party can learn about various powerful foes called Nuetsushima, or Nefarious Monsters, that require end-game levels and equipment to defeat.
  • Terminally Dependent Society: People from Arva Shulan cannot live for very long without being near a Akushana tree. This is due to having tempered with it in the past. They managed to boost it's effects but at the price of being dependant on it to live and, by the events of the game, their power is starting to fade. Shunya being from there but not being dependant on it is something of a plot point.
