Japanese version.

Batman Returns is a Platform Game developed by Aspect and published by Sega for the Game Gear. It was released in 1992 in Japan and the Americas, followed by Europe in 1993.

Like the Sega Master System version, the Game Gear version emphasizes the platform game aspects, which also includes choosing which level path to follow. The gameplay resembles some of the Shinobi games made for the GG, including swinging across large holes.

The Game Gear version of Batman Returns contains examples of:

  • Building Swing: Batman uses his grappling gear to swing across holes. In other instances, he uses it to ascend over platforms.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: Some of the enemies Batman takes out die by exploding.
  • Downer Beginning: The prologue starts with the Ice Princess being killed after falling from the building roof. The public blames Batman as the culprit.
  • Kill It with Fire: Batman fights certain enemis that use flamethrowers.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: Penguin's duck vehicle is equipped with missiles, which he uses against Batman during their boss fight.
  • Rooftop Confrontation: Stage 3 is the rooftops of Gotham, being possible to choose between two routes. Batman fights Catwoman on a rooftop as the stage boss in either route.
  • Throw Down the Bomblet: Female Red Triangle Circus gang members hurl bombs at Batman.
