Auri is a Game Mod for The Binding of Isaac that introduces the titular Auri as a playable character, alongside other alternate versions of her and some as unlockable items.

It was just a normal day for Isaac and his mother, until somebody was knocking at the door: a little girl in a tired and hungry state. Despite barely scrapping by themselves, she was welcomed into the Moriah home. But considering the religious and abusive mother of the household, things would go wrong for Auri in the long run.

Tropes that apply to the Auri mod and related lore:

  • Anti-Frustration Features: Extra life passive items that change the character you're playing as don't function the same way for Auri, instead merely doubling as a transformation upon death.
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Typically when Isaac collects certain items, he undergoes some form of mutilation to his face. Auri meanwhile either avoids mutilation entirely or downplay it in certain cases. Squeezy, for example, merely changes Auri's eye color to maroon instead of making her eyes popping out like a stress toy.
  • Bloody Horror: While the vanilla game as a whole features gratuitous use of gore that veers between Bloody Hilarious and this, this artwork posted by Iristeru showcases Tainted Auri's murder streak in a gruesome light, the various corpses of early game bosses being sliced apart or given unsightly gashes.
  • Break the Cutie: Each of Auri's counterparts, with the exception of the Witch of Endor, is the result of her going through the wringer in some fashion, resulting in her giving in to her sins, or in one case taking the easy way out...
  • Corrupt the Cutie: Based on her few counterparts — Tainted Auri, Dark Auri, Milcah and Naamah — Auri underwent this process from the quiet yet innocent girl. To drive the point home for Tainted Auri in particular, her completion marks note goes against the standard for the mod "???" to read in bloody "Just Kill Them All."
  • Creator Cameo: When picking up the Incubus item for Auri, the familiar is re-textured to appear like the workshop creators avatar, Iristeru.
  • Crown of Power: The Crown Of Light and the Dark Prince's Crown from the vanilla game, being default items for Auri and Milcah respectively, the latter being unlocked by obtaining her respective crown as Auri.
  • Devilish Hair Horns: Tainted Auri and Dark Auri features their hair tattered to appear like devil horns, serving to signify her change in morals.
  • Girl with Psycho Weapon: While Mom's Knife can be grabbed by any of the corrupt Auri's to invoke this trope, Tainted Auri in particular wields a knife like the Spirit swordnote  as part of their playstyle.
  • Guardian Angel: Auri, at least in her non-corrupted default state, is implied to be this for Isaac. Picking up the Little Auri passive item gives credence to this with its flavor text:
  • Halloween Episode: The October 15, 2022 update, which includes two witch-themed items and temporarily featured higher chance of Curse of the Darkness plus revamped versions of several of the characters (except Hang Girl), each leaning into the festivities aesthetically.
  • Have a Nice Death: Not only does Crown Of Death grant a monstrous attack modifier at the cost of killing the player character from one hit regardless of health, it'll results in some text popping up onscreen whenever you'll likely die.
    So you chosen death?
    Ignore this trinket next time
  • Non-Standard Character Design: In contrast to Isaac's eyes being a simplistic solid black with white light reflecting off, Auri and her counterparts are depicted with colored iris's in their eyes, making her appear Animesque.
  • Power at a Price: Several of the unlockable trinkets provide a damage buff to the holder, but comes with some permanent consequences:
    • Those that add broken hearts every time the player takes damage or transitions to a new floor.
    • Crown of Death grants a whopping 2.5 modifier to the player's damage, with the gravest of consequences: if the player holding it gets hit once, they're dead, end of story. Furthermore, this trinket in particular has the unique attribute of the item being 'gulped' permanently whenever holding/picking up, making it risky to so much as touch the thing.
  • Secret Character: Most of the other characters beside Auri are locked behind certain requirements. Attempting to select them early will have the requirements flash onscreen briefly before forcibly ending the run.
    • Dark Auri: Get all completion marks with Auri.
    • Milcah: Get the Dark Prince's Crown as Auri.
    • Hang Girl: Get both items Depression and Transcendence in the same run.
    • Naamah: Get the Succubus item as Auri.
  • Shout-Out: Many of the custom costumes/aesthetics for Auri reference various other works:
    • Libra turns Auri's skin blue on one side, yellow on the other, that alongside her triangular face making her resemble ENA.
    • Auri's unique look upon obtaining Death's Touch doesn't turn her head into a skull, but gives her a Perpetual Smiler face with empty eye sockets, reminiscent of Sans.
    • Two transformations based on characters from Super Mario Bros.; Mushroom Man gives her Mario's outfit, including a moustache, while the "Oh Crap" transformation gives her the overalls of Wario.
    • Having the Tooth And Nail results in the statue form resembling Bertran from the "Bertran" mod.
  • Time Master:
    • Auri is equipped with The Glowing Hourglass, which in addition to the item's ability to turn back time to before entering a room, gives Auri the unique passive ability to turn back time to survive an attack that would kill her, at the cost of the hourglass being broken and becoming unavailable for her next run.
    • Dark Auri is a passive case of this, with the ability of The Glowing Hourglass sending her back to a previous room whenever she takes damage from an enemy. While this sounds incredibly powerful, it generally comes with the consequence of gaining a broken heart each time, reducing her max health. Meanwhile, her active item allows her to avert this; preventing the time reversal effect from damage taken.
