"Adios means goodbye"
Adios is a cinematic first-person game about sticking to a complicated decision. It was released in 2021 by Mischief to PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
Adios contains examples of:
- Affably Evil: The hitman in most of his interactions with the farmer attempts to convince him to not go back on the deal knowing what he'll have to do later.
- But Thou Must!: None of your choices make any meaningful change to the final outcome, but more mundanely, the farmer can choose to not turn the light on when he enters the shed with the hitman, but instead the hitman turns the light on.
- Cannot Spit It Out: There are certain dialogue options in the game that effectively can't be picked. These allude to the farmers's real motivations for stopping his deal with the mob.
- Deal with the Devil: The farmer has made one of these with the mob, originally due to his son's medical bills.
- Extremely Short Timespan: The game takes place over a single day, chronicling the protagonist's last moments in his life as an accessory to murder.
- The Faceless: Since the game is played in the first-person, the farmer is never seen. Additionally, the bathroom doesn't have a mirror, and the other shiny surfaces aren't sufficiently reflective.
- Foregone Conclusion: The farmer (in spite of his friend's insistence to the contrary) enforces this, knowing what will happen to him should he not agree to the mob's deal of continuing his job as a corpse disposer due to a combination of grief, regret and a desire to move on. As the Downer Ending shows, he succeeded.
- Grow Old with Me: The farmer marries his high school sweetheart and has children with her. Unfortunately, his wife doesn't live to the old age with him.
- Guilt-Ridden Accomplice: The farmer feels guilty for being an accessory to murders committed by the mob.
- Locked Out of the Loop: The farmer's son, Bill, is this for his parent's involvement with the mob.
- Minimalist Cast: There are only 5 voiced characters, and only 3 of them appear on screen.
- The Mourning After: The farmer loses his wife to dementia and doesn't even respond to the hitman's suggestion that he should move on with someone else.
- Professional Killer: The hitman is a killer for the mob and ultimately kills the farmer.
- Redemption Equals Death: The farmer is well aware that ending the deal will result in his death, but is hoping that his death will serve as a redemption of sorts for him.
- The Vietnam Vet: The farmer appears to be a Vietnam veteran who went once due to conscription, and a second time as a camera-man.
