Trivia / The Nut Job

Go To

  • Accidentally Correct Zoology: While Surly being purple is more likely just an artistic decision, purple squirrels have been sighted in the UK and the U.S. with little explanation to their coloring.
  • Celebrity Voice Actor: There are a lot of stars in the cast, but of note is Katherine Heigl as Andie, in her first voice acting role.
  • Deleted Scene: There exists a short clip that does not appear in the finalized film titled "Why Buy a Nut Store?" This scene has King referring to any animal that is small and furry as a rat. When Fingers offers King some nuts, he pushes them out of his hand because he is allergic. Lana then questions why King bought a nut store if he is allergic to what the store sells, which ends in awkward silence from King and his men.
  • Dueling Dubs: There's two dubbed versions of the film in Latin America: One dubbed in Mexico for that country and the rest of Latin America in theaters and Netflix, and another one used exclusively in Chile with Chilean voice actors. The Mexican dub, for obvious reasons, is the most well-known one.
  • Dueling Movies: Subverted. Vanguard Animation (the studio behind Space Chimps, Valiant, and Happily N'Ever After) had also proposed a squirrel-based heist movie called The Nut House around the same time that The Nut Job was first announced, but Vanguard instead went out of business with The Nut House and several other projects still in the can.
  • Executive Meddling: The film was animated in South Korea and financed by the South Korean government, who insisted that the popular song "Gangnam Style" be placed in the film.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • The sequel sees American voice actors Tom Kenny and Kari Wahlgren replacing Canadian voice actors Robert Tinkler and Annick Obonsawin as Buddy and Jamie.
    • This is also the case when the film transitioned from the original "Surly Squirrel" short; with the original voices for Surly and Buddy - Bruce Hunter and Gerald Ryley - being replaced. Hunter would also be replaced as Raccoon come the film.
  • Real-Life Relative: Anders Bye and Siri Nilsen who did the voices of Surly and Andie in the Norwegian dub, actual got married in real life.
  • You Might Remember Me from...: James Rankin, a Canadian voice actor and puppeteer who had roles on famous preschool shows from the 1990's such as Franklin and The Noddy Shop, got back into the voice-acting business again after the success of this film, in which he played a burglar named Fingers.
