Trivia / The General's Daughter

Go To

  • Ability over Appearance: John Travolta's performance in The General's Daughter so impressed the author of the original book, despite being almost the complete opposite of the book's description of Warrant Officer Paul Brenner.
  • Completely Different Title: Known in France as Le Déshonneur d'Elisabeth Campbell ("the dishonor of Elizabeth Campbell").note
  • Deleted Scene: A love scene between Brenner and Sunhill was cut from the final film.
  • Science Marches On: A major plot point in this movie. DNA testing only became accepted in American courts in 1992, the same year Elizabeth Campbell was raped. The Army leadership considered the crime to be unsolvable and chose to cover it up. The threat of contemporary DNA testing methods convinces a suspect to identify the rapists.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • John Cusack was, at one time, the lead candidate for Paul Brenner. But it was agreed that he was too young for the role. Michael Douglas was offered the role and Bruce Willis was considered.
    • Laura Dern was offered $1 million to co-star as Sara Sunhill, but she chose to make Daddy and Them instead.
