Trivia / Rapa-Nui (1994)

Go To

  • Box Office Bomb: Budget: $20 million. Worldwide box office: $305,070. It's one of the biggest box office bombs ever made and made two "worst of 1994" lists (one from The San Diego Union-Tribune's David Elliott and another from Siskel & Ebert).
  • Fake Nationality: There is not a single person from Easter Island in the film, not even as extras. Leads range between Hawaiian-Chinese Jason Scott Lee, NY Puerto Rican Esai Morales, and British-Chinese Sandrine Holt. The lion's share of the cast was filled by New Zealander actors of Maori descent, and the rest by extras in Brownface.
  • Referenced by...: Mars Attacks! not just references it for one of the visual gags, but uses part of the film's footage.
  • Star-Derailing Role: Kevin Reynolds was hailed as the next big director after the success of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. This was his very next project, killing any momentum he had ever gained. In fact, his star power had dwindled so much that the VHS and DVD releases bore on their covers "Kevin Costner presents" (he co-produced the film) rather than "Directed by Kevin Reynolds."
