- Acting for Two: Gabriel Iglesias voices both Ned and Zed.
- Actor Allusion:
- The two Jolly Rogers Super Hornets who escort Dusty are played by Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards, aka Iceman and Goose.
- A possible one for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays Rochelle. In Seinfeld, the fictional film "Rochelle, Rochelle" was a bit of a Running Gag.
- Artistic License – Engineering: During the scene that takes place in New York City, the skyline features an already-completed One World Trade Center. Although vertical construction had finished, it wouldn’t be completed for another 15 months after the film’s release.
- Dueling Movies: With Turbo. Both feature a protagonist who wants to (and participates in a) race, yet their species/vehicle type isn't expected to. Turbo has proven to be a least a little better than Planes.
- Licensed Game: A dual PC/Mac version (released on physical discs in Europe but exclusive to Steam in North America), a Wii U version◊, and a Nintendo 3DS version◊, as well as a legacy version◊ for the Wii and a legacy version◊ for the Nintendo DS (the Nintendo DS version being one of the last games released on the game system).
- Playing Against Type: Roger Craig Smith as Ripslinger, who is a total jerkass in stark contrast to his more heroic roles.
- Voices in One Room: Carlos Alazraqui (El Chupacabra), Roger Craig Smith (Ripslinger), and Danny Mann (Sparky) recorded together.
- What Could Have Been:
- Overlapping with The Other Marty, but Jon Cryer of Two and a Half Men fame was originally slated to play Dusty, and even recorded dialogue, but Dane Cook voiced him in the final product.
- Overlapping with Permanent Placeholder, but according to this interview, Roger Craig Smith initially just did scratch work for Ripslinger, but he gave such a good performance that he ended up with the role.
- After the sequel Planes: Fire & Rescue, there was supposed to be a third entry in the series about outer space exploration. However, it was taken off the release schedule in March 2018 and Disneytoon Studios closed down months later, meaning we won't likely ever see it.
- There were also plans for additional Cars spin-offs focusing on other vehicle types such as boats and trains. With Disneytoon Studios folded up, these plans never came to effect.
