- Actor-Shared Background:
- Nick and Winston are from Chicago as are their actors Jake Johnson and Lamorne Morris.
- Hannah Simone is also of (partially) Indian ancestry and has worked as a fashion model.
- Big Scmidt is played by Rob Riggle, and both are former marines.
- Ashley is an Oregon native, just like her actress Kaitlin Olson.
- The Cast Showoff: If something has Zooey Deschanel in it, it will have singing. Jess will randomly burst into song for no reason.
- The Danza: Jess’s father, Bob, was played by a man named Rob. Both names are short for Robert.
- Looping Lines: "Injured" was intended as Sadie's debut, but aired after an episode where she was shown knowing Nick. So her actress recorded some terrible, rushed ADR in the two seconds her face was conspicuously off-camera to iron out the continuity error.
- Promoted Fanboy:
- Prince was a big fan of the show and actually wrote Fox and the producers asking if he can cameo on the show. Obviously, they did and he apparently told them that the show was the only thing he watched besides the news.
- Taylor Swift is also a fan of the show, so the cameo part of Elaine was written for her.
- Queer Character, Queer Actor: Megan Fox is bisexual, like her character Reagan.
- Real-Life Relative:
- Damon Wayans Jr. (Coach)'s real life aunt Kim Wayans plays Schmidt's mother's girlfriend Susan.
- In "James Wonder", David Hornsby (Ed) is Zooey Deschanel's brother-in-law.
- Separated-at-Birth Casting: Both of the actresses playing young Cece and Jess look uncannily like them. Young Cece even manages a Match Cut with present day Cece and it is flawless.
- Throw It In!: The cast is allowed to improvise, and Jake Johnson is the most notable improviser. The showrunners also admit to relying on the cast members a bit more than they should on the direction of their characters.
- Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: According to this interview, entire scripts could be changed days before table reads and spontaneous decisions made on the fly. Tropes Are Not Bad since it's led to great subversions like resolving major UST between the leads in season 2, much earlier than most shows out there.
- You Look Familiar:
- Damon Wayans Jr. (Coach) also played "Stevie", an old partner of Jake Peralta in one episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is set in the same universe as New Girl.
- Mary Elizabeth Ellis (Caroline) played a medical examiner in the first season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is the sister show to New Girl.
- Nasim Pedrad (Aly) played Kate Peralta in season five of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is set in the same universe as New Girl.
