Trivia / Music and Lyrics

  • Breakaway Pop Hit: The song "Way Back Into Love" greatly surpassed the film's success (although it's not entirely unheard of), to Germans Love David Hasselhoff levels in the Philippines. In fact, it was even repackaged as the theme song to Precious Hearts Romances Presents..., a fairly successful TV adaptation of various Philippine pocketbooks. Many Filipinos are unaware it originated from Music and Lyrics, or perhaps know of the film yet associate it more strongly with stuff like Precious Hearts Romances Presents....
  • California Doubling: Sort of. The interior shots of Madison Square Garden are the not-too-far-away Nassau Colosseum in Long Island.
  • The Cast Showoff: Hugh Grant, Drew Barrymore, and Haley Bennett all do their own singing for the film. Grant did some of his own piano playing, but only in full-body shots where his hands are visible; while he'd studied piano as a child, he hadn't played in so long that he needed to re-learn in preparation for the role.
  • Dawson Casting: The implied-underage Cora is played by then-19 Haley Bennett.
  • Fake Brit: Colin is played by American Scott Porter.
  • Technology Marches On: Being a film made between 2006 and 2007, it's no surprise that both cell phones and the internet play only passing roles in the plot.
    • Not only are all of the cell phones in the movie the kind that only make calls, but the only characters who use them are the ones who need to stay in constant contact with their business partners like Alex and Gary. At Cora's concert, there's a distinct lack of people holding up their phones to record or take photos. Also, when Rhonda tries to take a picture with Alex, she uses a actual camera and asks someone to take it for her, rather than merely taking a selfie (she also says "take a picture" instead of "take a selfie").
    • Sophie sends Cora the new lyrics to "Way Back Into Love" via fax. In the smartphone age, Sophie could have sent Cora the new lyrics through text, email or GoogleDrive/Dropbox and Cora would be able to read them off of her phone.
    • In the streaming age, Sophie could have looked up Alex's solo album on Spotify or YouTube rather than buying the last CD of it at the record store (though considering what a flop the album is In-Universe, it's possible nobody would have even bothered to upload it to either). Similarly, Alex personally delivers a physical CD of the demo to Cora, who listens to it on a diskman, rather than emailing her an MP3 or streaming link; even if she still wanted to hear it in person, he'd have just played it on his phone.
    • Alex reads some of Sophie's poetry on her college's website. Today, she'd more likely have shared it through Facebook.
