  • Bury Your Art: Until 2020, developer Next Level Games did not mention this game on their website due to the backlash the game received from the Metroid fanbase.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: A victim of the eshop closure. Meaning, the only way to play this is a physical cartridge. Prices online are also somewhat demanding too.
  • Milestone Celebration: Technically. It was released the same month as Metroid's 30th anniversary, but Nintendo themselves never acknowledged this.
  • Saved from Development Hell: Development began in 2009, but the Nintendo DS wasn't powerful enough to handle performance. The project was put on ice for a few years before it was revived to serve as a Nintendo 3DS game (specifically to push the New Nintendo 3DS revision).
  • Schedule Slip: Internally, the game was intended to release in late 2014/early 2015, to act as a launch title for the New Nintendo 3DS (though the game was not exclusive to that version of the system). However, it was delayed into the following year, releasing in August 2016.
  • Sequel Gap: The first Metroid game to come out since Metroid: Other M 6 years before, and the first in the Prime line since Metroid Prime 3: Corruption 9 years before.
  • What Could Have Been: The final version of Federation Force actually began as a separate Metroid project known as Project Valkyrie, which was a standalone four-person PvP title that, prior to its retooling into Federation Force, was targeting the Wii U.
