Trivia / Hotel Rwanda

Go To

  • Ability over Appearance: The lean Don Cheadle doesn't at all resemble the heavier, round-faced Paul Rusesabagina, but his performance won wide praise, including from Rusesabagina himself.
  • Banned in China: The film is banned in Rwanda because of its heroic depiction of Paul Rusesabagina, who maintains the real reason for his conviction is because the current leader of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, is a dictator who wants to silence him.
  • The Danza:
    • Dube is played by Desmond Dube.
    • David O'Hara plays David.
  • Fake Nationality:
  • Follow the Leader: Most contemporarily it was one of a couple of films following Black Hawk Down that was a piece about war and turmoil in modern Africa. And though most of them were set in the Nazi Holocaust of World War II, this like them seemed to be a part of a number genocide-themed films released after the impact of Schindler's List.
  • In Memoriam: To the nearly one million Tutsis and Hutus slain throughout the genocide.
  • Limited Special Collector's Ultimate Edition: There's lots of bonus material if you buy even the Vanilla Edition, though, including DVD Commentary by the real Paul Rusesabagina himself.
  • What Could Have Been: Director Terry George had Don Cheadle in mind for the lead part from the beginning of his involvement. During pre-production, potential investors and interested studios wanted Will Smith, Wesley Snipes or Denzel Washington because of their suggested bigger drawing capacity at the box office. But due to ultimately producing the film independently and coming up with the money himself, George was able to go back to his original choice. Cuba Gooding Jr. was offered the role, but declined.
