- Real Life Writes the Plot:
- The songs are inspired by Joni's experiences on a road trip from Maine to L.A.
- "Furry Sings the Blues" was inspired by a meeting with legendary Memphis bluesman Furry Lewis. It didn't go well. He hated this song too and tried to sue Mitchell over it.
- What Could Have Been: Joni intended to collaborate with Miles Davis on "Furry Sings The Blues", but the trumpeter was deep into his "locked-up period" and wasn't available. She settled for Neil Young on Harmonica.
