Trivia / Frasier (2023)

Go To

  • Channel Hop: The original series aired on NBC, just like its parent series Cheers. This series streams exclusively on Paramount+.
  • The Character Died with Him: John Mahoney, who played Martin Crane in Frasier, died in 2018. His character is said to have died not long before the events of this series. The first episode ends with a dedication to him.
  • Creator Backlash: Ken Levine, who wrote for both Cheers and the original Frasier, has spoken very critically of the new series on his podcast, having problems with the premise, characters, set design and writing. He also took issue with Kelsey Grammer’s comments that the last show “took itself too seriously” at times, which Levine countered was merely the original team striving for excellence. Levine did admit, though, that some of the “mistakes” he’s seen are ones he himself once made, and retains hope the show improves should it continue.
  • Fake American: English Jack Cutmore-Scott, Canadian Jess Salgueiro and Nigerian Toks Olagundoye as Americans Freddy, Eve and Olivia.
  • In Memoriam: The first episode is dedicated to Gabrielle James (a script supervisor who worked on Cheers and the original Frasier), Archie Lyndhurst (Nicholas Lyndhurst's son) and John Mahoney.
  • The Other Darrin: Jack Cutmore-Scott plays Freddy Crane, a role played by several actors on both Cheers and Frasier, most prominently Trevor Einhorn.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Showrunner Joe Cristalli used to have a twitter account where he wrote about imaginary Frasier episodes set in the present day.
  • Role Reprise: Kelsey Grammer returns to the role of Dr. Frasier Crane after a 19-year absence. Bebe Neuwirth has so far reprised her role as Dr. Lilith Sternin in one episode, while Peri Gilpin has also made one guest appearance as Roz Doyle.
  • Saved from Development Hell: A revival had been rumored as early as 2016 but did not enter active development until 2021.
  • Separated-at-Birth Casting: Anders Keith, as Niles and Daphne’s son, David, bears a noticeable resemblance to both David Hyde Pierce and Jane Leeves.
  • Sequel Gap: The revival picks up 19 years after the end of the original.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The character of baby John is named after John Mahoney, and the bar where the characters hang out is called Mahoney's.
    • One of Freddie's firefighter buddies is named Moose, which was the name of the dog that played Eddie in the early seasons of the original.
  • What Could Have Been: The series was originally going to be about Frasier and Niles running a theater together, but the premise had to be changed when David Hyde Pierce chose not to return.
