word. The fact that another studio took the name to use it for [[VideoGame/WillyWombat an otherwise completely unrelated game]] likely also played a part.

* FranchiseOwnershipAcquisition: The former unofficial mascot of the original Platform/PlayStation, has had quite a few owners over the years. Though published by Sony Computer Entertainment from 1996-2000, the Crash Bandicoot series was owned by Universal Interactive (a subsidiary of Creator/{{Universal}} focused on the creation and publication of video games). Universal Interactive held onto Crash until 2003 when its parent company sold the video game division to Creator/{{Vivendi}}. Vivendi's game division, originally called "Vivendi Universal Interactive Publishing" then eventually renamed Vivendi Games, was in turn sold to Creator/{{Activision}} in 2008. Decades later, Creator/ActivisionBlizzard (resulting from a merger with Creator/BlizzardEntertainment) would be acquired by Creator/{{Microsoft}}. [[{{Irony}} The one-time unofficial mascot of the PlayStation brand is now in the possession of a rival video game console manufacturer]].

* ChannelHop: The original games were co-published by Sony and Universal, then Universal dropped Sony and had complete control of the franchise. After Universal splitted from then-parent Vivendi and left their video game and [[Creator/UniversalMusicGroup music division]] with the latter company, the property went to Vivendi Games [[note]] formerly Vivendi Universal Games [[/note]]. Then Vivendi sent the series to subsidiary Sierra, who had the series for a few games. Then Vivendi Games/Sierra got bought by Creator/{{Activision}}, where it remains to this day. On the developer side, the games were initially developed by Creator/NaughtyDog, but once they were done with the series, it got handed off to multiple developers from Eurocom, to Creator/TravellersTales, Vicarious Visions, and Creator/RadicalEntertainment.

* KidsMealToy: Crash was often paired with ''Franchise/SpyroTheDragon'' for these kinds of promotions:
** In 2000, Taco Bell had a set of four toys, two for each franchise. Crash's toys included a skateboarding figure who could be launched off his skateboard and a scuba-diving figure.
** In 2001, Carl's Jr. and Hardee's had four different toys, three of which were of Crash. One was a bendable figure and two were pull-back toys.
** UsefulNotes/McDonalds had two sets of LCD handheld games. The first one was released in 2004 and had six different games. The second one was released in 2005 to tie in with ''VideoGame/CrashBandicootPurpleRiptosRampage'' and ''VideoGame/SpyroOrangeTheCortexConspiracy'', with four games for each franchise.

* ScrewedByTheNetwork:
** Aside from the creation of Crash being vague and complicated, Universal Interactive constantly tried to take credit for making the game. Naughty Dog wasn't even allowed to appear at E3 and the press release artwork didn't have their name or logo anywhere on there but [[TakeThat in retaliation]], [[WriterRevolt Naughty Dog created their own press release of the game's demo in front of E3 with their name on it]].

** The game's producer David Siller was in talks with Universal Interactive to make a third installment to ''VideoGame/AeroTheAcroBat'' as a 3D platformer and even considered making him a mascot as well, Game director Jason Rubin saw this as a betrayal and was furious at this decision.

* CommonKnowledge: Similar to Spyro, many assume that Naughty Dog sold the Crash Bandicoot rights to Universal in the process of moving to Sony for ''VideoGame/JakAndDaxter''. In reality, Universal ''always'' had the rights, and this publisher/developer rights relationship is a practice that's still common today (when Creator/{{Bungie}} left Creator/{{Microsoft}}, they had to leave ''Franchise/{{Halo}}'' behind).

** Fans often refer to the Fake Crash character as Trash Bandicoot but he is often confused for Evil Crash who is a completely different character who debuted in [[VideoGame/CrashTwinsanity Twinsanity]].
